| Am I treating the popeye disease right? I noticed that a day ago my fish's eye was bulging out and it looked like there was a grey film over it. I immediately went out and bought a 5 gallon tank kit for a quarantine (this was at 4 am) and added tetra safestart, maracyn-two to treat the popeye, a dose of melafix, a pinch of aquarium salt, and of course, got a heater and turned it up to 84 degrees. Am I treating this right? my fish is a blue ram. I don't think he's terribly sick yet because he's swimming around and eating like normal. I think I might have introduced the popeye disease by accidentally spilling petsmart water into my main 20 gallon. My water parameters and everything were fine but the blue ram had only been there a week when I added the new fish so I think he was still stressed and that made him susceptible to the disease. Everyone else in the tank is fine so far. Am I doing this properly? The blue ram is only a baby (one inch long) and I am trying to aggressively treat this because popeye just sucks. Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks!
Edit: For this reason I HIGHLY recommend a quarantine tank. It's very fast to just throw one together and just add something like cycle or tetras safestart to jumpstart the filter. When you're done with the quarantine tank you can disinfect it with vinegar and put it back in the box and save it until next time. That way you don't waste electricity or space by having a second tank going all the time. with nothing in it. |
