Is My Male Krib Sick?

I made a water change a few days ago, may a little cooler water that normal....he and the female were looking as if they were spawning at the time, but as soon as i did the water change, he seemed to become more sluggish, not chasing the mollies or paying to much attention to the female...he opens his mouth more than normal and i saw him hanging out by the bubbles a lot.....his color fades once in a while...but im not sure if he's sick or not....help

Hmm... what are your paramteres? Did you use dechlorinator in the tank? Did you dose the whole tank or just the amount you added into the tank?

Hello Raptor. I hope your Krib is going to be ok. Knowing your cycle readings will be a big help. (ammonia, nitrite and nitrate). Keep us posted. Always try to get your water temperature for the water changes as close as possible to the temperature in the tank. Sudden temperature changes can be harmful.

Yes big water changes and also different temps at water change time can help trigger spawning, however with kribs you really shouldn't need to do this, they should spawn on their own if you feed them well and keep them in clean water. I don't agree but lots of people will tell you doing a big water change say 50-60% if you normally do 10-15% is actually bad for your tank. They will say you should build up to a big change, again I don't agree but many people do so something to think about.

Part of your problem may be the size of the tank. A 12gal tank with the krib pair and a few other fish plus a cory may cause problems with trying to get them to spawn. Another thing to think about although the kribs should be able to protect their eggs once layed, cory's are great for finding and eating eggs after lights out.

thats true, but dont i need dither fish or is that just to get them out of the caves?? well he's still hanging out by the bubbles and comes down once in a while to flirt with the female but goes back up to the bubbles for long periods of time.

Dithers will help shy fish come out, but with cichlids, even kribs, in a 12gal you don't have much room to play with.
