| Guppy problems Greetings: I have a female guppy that is acting odd. she is holding close to the surface and has started to get a dark spot to teh right side of her head. the right eye is also enlarged. none of the other tank mates are acting odd and I would liek to keep it that way. I could use some advice on what to do . I will try to get a pic up if it would help

| sounds like maybe a water problem ? no nitrates isnt good unless you have allot of live plants...do you? and what kind of plec is it?
id up the water changes for a few days to 30% with the prime to be safe .... |

| welcome to FL, snow!
I'm sorry your guppy isn't well.
Do you know about the nitrogen cycle? I am fairly new as well, and understanding the cycle went a very long way in my understanding how to best care for my fish. There is a good write-up about it on FL, but even better than that is when the moderators have explained it in easy-to-understand terms in response to questions on the forums. I would read up on that a bit.
My other thought was that maybe you had ammonia in your tank from so many fish, and that was stressing your fish out. But you have no ammonia. This is a bit confusing for me. Without nitrates, your tank probably isn't fully cycled yet. So I would expect ammonia in the water (fish waste turns into ammonia). What kind of test are you using? The members here don't recommend the strips, as they aren't very accurate. The liquid tests are supposed to be better. |

the smaller the tank, the harder it is to keep things in check and again, depending on your plec, it maybe a major issue with him and his bioload....whats type is your test kit?
EDIT: mommybaby great info! but his aquarium info says the op does know about the nitrogen cycle |

| Sorry, About that! My Mind is shot lately. The DOC. told me that it appeared to be a bactiral infection and ICH ( he noticed the white spots, I missed them completely) I was told to take out the filters and treat with 1cc Amoxil per 10g once a day and a standard ich treatment (nox-ich). three days later and we are all looking good. at the end of the 3 days i did a 50% water change (That is after 10% changes evey day)
I hope this helps |
