| | Fish Keeper | All My Fish Are Dying Hi everyone.
This might be kind of a long post, but I'd really appreciate it if you'd read it.
In the past year or so, I've had 13 fish- 2 gouramis- 7 Brochis Splendens, 2 three line cories, and, in another tank, 2 dwarf puffers.
I am down to 4 today- a gourami, and 3 brochis catfish. And one of the brochis appears to be dying.
All of my catfish have died the same way. They seem really healthy. I'm talking literally no symptoms whatsoever, except a slight lightening of the skin, and then they turn upside down and rocket all of over the tank, ending up curled, on their backs in the gravel. By that time, they are white. The time that it takes them to die after that varies from immediately to a day or two.
I woke up today and found my brochis in this state.
I have tried various methods of treatment on the different fish, but none have been successful.
4 of them I either found dead or died immediately, so I wasn't able to treat. On the others, I've used Jungle Parasite Clear, Maracyn, (the fish had fin rot as well) and just stresscoat+ and TLC. Nothing has worked.
If anyone has any ideas, any at all, as to what could be causing this and how to treat it, I need your help.
I'm really confused right now, because I don't know what could be happening. My tank has been cycled for over a year, I do weekly water changes, I have live plants... As far as I can see, there isn't any factor in my tank that could be causing this.
My final problem is this- I'm leaving on vacation for the weekend tomorrow morning, and I don't know what to do about the sick fish. Its very possible he might die by then, but if he doesn't... I don't have any friends who keep fish, and I think that my grandparents are getting too old for me to leave them with this responsibility.
Thanks in advance. |

| | Moderator | I'm really sorry about your losses.
It's very strange that fish from different tanks would pass the same way.
Have you ruled out soap residue, hand lotions or creams, room spray?
Is there anything in the tanks that aren't specifically made for aquarium use? |

| | Fish Keeper | Thanks.
I haven't totally ruled those things out, but my buckets and stuff are only for aquariums, they havent been used for anything else. I guess lotions are possible, but I don't really use them all that much, and I don't have any sort of air freshener in my room.
I have some plastic plants that I got at JoAnnes, I got the idea from people here on fishlore, but I don't think its those, because I had fish dying of this long before they were added. |

| | Fish Helper | I have no clue, but your symptons sound like a poisoning because sometimes those come on quick and would cause abrupt behavior. Can you put your sick fish in a quarantine when you leave so if he does die he wont infect other fish. also my experience with Jungle medication was not good at all! i think it caused more of my fish to die than help. I only had 1 fish survive the treatments after they were all done. and i do not know what brochis catfish are but, using medication on scaless fish can harm them, as i remembered that from my pictus catfish when treating the tank i had to use half the medication, but they died anyway. I prefer not to use medication at all now. I hope things work out for you. ; )
btw- dwarf puffers, should on be 1 in a tank, they are little, but will kill each other , very terrortoral. I learned the hard way, i had 3, now 1. |

| | Moderator | Hello Me. So sorry to hear about your fish loss. Unfortunately there isn't much I can add to what has already been suggested.
As for your vacation, If it isn't too late, I would suggest a water change and a feeding and try not to worry too much. From what I've read you'll fish should be fine without food up to 7 days. However, if the fish is already ill it's hard to say if it will be ok or not.
Best wishes. Try to enjoy your vacation!
oh...the new water that you add during your water changes, is the pH of the new water the same or higher than what is in your tank. (if so then we can rule out pH issues).

| | Fish Keeper | Thanks everyone.
As for the fish who was sick when I left, he died the morning I was leaving. And at 6.30 with a plane to catch there wasn't much I could do to help my other fish.
I don't think pH would be a problem, because I get all my water from the same place. And I treat it all with this pH regulator, because I have a lot of bogwood in my tanks. Everyone at my LFS uses it and has never had any trouble, so I don't think that is my problem.
And thanks for the information about Jungle, I'll see if I can try and find something else.
Oh, and about the puffers, I had them at two separate times, so they didn't kill each other. |

Since you use a pH regulator, have you been monitoring it closely? |

| | Fish Master | Sorry for your loss. I remember reading a thread here wa little while ago. There was something abnormal going through the water supply. Have you heard of anything like this in your area? I dont think its so much a disease, but my guess is on the water... |

| | Fish Keeper | Bad news, lost another this morning...
Ah, this is so frustrating! I am a incredibly fact oriented person, and the mystery behind this is driving me nuts, not to mention the fact that I'm down to two of my beloved fish. I'll check my water supply, but I looked at that in August and it didn't say anything. I'll definitely check again. And I'll make sure to keep my pH in check.
If anyone has any other ideas, however obscure, please please please tell me! |

| | Fish Bum | maybe your fish just need a good change of food, it sounds almost like the other person said about poising but in saying that there is normally noticable signs like on their fins. sorry about you loosing all your fish, if the rest die i would suggest a gravel clean before getting anymore.
good luck |

| | Fish Helper | do a fish autopsy maybe you'll find something like parasites. But seriously how long does it take for the fish to die the curling could be a sign, pictures might help |

| | Fish Keeper | How long it takes the fish to die really depends. A lot of the time it happens at night, so I wake up to find them either dead or just hanging on. The fits that leave them on the gravel dead or practically dead usually last a minute or two. But they always die within a day, or at the latest two.
Heres a picture- They all look like this. Pale, upside down, and wrapped around a leaf or piece of wood. |
