Very Sick Catfish

Hello everyone.

I am having a serious problem with one of my catfish, he's about six inches long and very slim. I also have another catfish, 2 aglae eaters, an African Cichlad, and a convict. They are all fine except for the one catfish who has cloudy and I believe pop out eyes. This morning I noticed that his skin in peeling. He's eating and swimming. I got these tablets for Fungus and hoping this will help. I'm very, very worried about him. Any suggestions or advise?
Mary Rose I have a 40 gallon tank and am new to this, but I love the fish.
I change the water at least once a week and put new salt in.

Hi Mary Welcome to FishLore

I'm really sorry your fish isn't feeling well. It would be helpful to know your readings for ammonia, nitrite and nitrates.
Many times when something goes wrong, it can be traced back to the water quality.
Popeye is one of those things that's often times a water issue.
Peeling skin can also sometimes be attributed to water quality.
We need to rule that out first.
I see you're using salt, if I'm not mistaken cat fish don't do well with salt.

Can you get the readings for us?
Personally, at this point I'd do a water change but not add more salt.

Thank you, I thought about the salt too because my husband adds salt and I don't know it and then I do. I put that anti fungus stuff in and hope it works but if by tonight it doesn't I'm going to change the water. I don't want to lose him. I only lost 1 so far and that was due to Charlie(my Africian Cichad) eating him, which wasn't very pleasant. If you don't mind I'll let you know how he's doing. Thanks again.

Hello,
Well my catfish passed away Friday night. I was really upset. This is the first fish I ever lost. I did a 25% water change and really cleaned the tank. So far everyone else is ok and happy. Thank for your help

Salt will kill a fish without scales!!! Inverts like shrimp, snails will not do well with it either, nor is it good for FW plants. IMO, stop using the salt. It has it's uses though as far as killing external parasites, i.e. ICH but actually does nothing more then that.
I'm so sorry for your loss, I know it hurts
