Help Help Help. Fish dying like flies!

I did a 25% water change two days ago. There are about 15 very small three spot gourami fry in a 60 litre tank. They were fine yesterday and i came in today and there are three dead on the bottom of the tank, with what looks like bleeding on their scales. Another larger one has blood spots all over its body (still alive and swimming alright). I checked heater and filter and the heater plug had come out. The water was cold but not icy. I've plugged it back in. Before i noticed, i fed them and only a few have come to the surface to eat. Some are hanging around the top, most are lethargic. pH 6.5 Nitrates 10 mg/l. They have been perfectly healthy, growing fish up until today. Could the bleeding be due to just the temp. or something else? Should i be raising the temperature slowly thanks in advance!

I haven't heard of this bleeding before - but I suspect it is to do with the stress of the water temperature changing alot. Perhpaps they where stressed and got some sort of internal bacteria?

Possibly. There are two more dead today. What should i treat them for? All are lethargic and looking like they are having trouble swimmin upward. One of the dead ones today had really protruding eyes, and i don't know if i'm being paranoid but some look like their scales are poking out a little... Should i treat them for bacterial disease... if so, what do i give them? thanks!

Here are some photos. They're not that great. On more observation, a few are hanging around the top, their mouths nearly out of the water. When i poke them, they swim away quite well - not too wonky or anything. I'm so confused!

Hello J. So sorry to hear about your fish loss. Can you post your readings for ammonia and nitrite please? I see you have 10 nitrates.

If the fishes scales are starting to protrude (called pine coning) it could be a sign of dropsy. I'm listing a couple of links that you may find helpful. Some have graphic photos of fish disease. Just to let you know ahead of time.

Best of luck! Hold on for some more reply's.

Sorry to hear you are loosing your gourami's.
I know that red streaks can be caused by high ammonia. Not sure if those photos constitute 'streaks' but by their behavior it sounds like you may have a case of high ammonia going on in your tank. It would help to know what that reading is.

I've done another water change today and readings are: ammonia- 0, nitrite- 0, nitrate- somewhere between 0 and 10 mg/l and pH- 6.5. The guy at my local fish shop said that the most common disease that comes up after a sudden drop in heat is Velvet. I told him that i couldn't see any signs of it and he said that might because the fish are pale blue and its hard to see. He also said the gasping at the top of the tank could be gill flukes?? Anyway, i bought some Protozin for velvet and i;ve already got some sterazin for gill flukes. He said i should give them the protozin first, as velvet's more likely. It doesn't explain the bleeding though... any thoughts?

As far as i know, velvet disease only develops in and around the gill. It is also velvety looking, bloody. I would hold off fore more members to give you their insight..

I'm sorry to hear about your fish Could it be columnaris? Do you notice any slimy film on their skin? Here's a link.

I dont think so. It says that columnaris is from a rise in temp, not a drop. And the red spots arn't turning into ulcers. What's strange is that all of them are showing different symptoms. Only two have the blood specks (not including the dead ones) and only a few are gasping at the surface. the littler ones seem to be ok. There are some darkish blemishes in front of the gills on one of the gasping ones, and i thought i saw some tiny tiny, black floaty somethings hanging of the gills. Does that make velvet more likely?? thanks for replies btw.

Ok, i'm positive about the black things hanging off the gills. Quite a few of them have it. they are coming from the underside of the gill. I'm almost positive that's not normal
