Hi all,
I have two bengal loaches that are exhibiting what I think are the signs of gill flukes: excessive flashing, turning pale, lethargy, hiding, and rarely eating. I started treatment 7/22 with Maracide, second dose on 7/23, and the third dose due today (I have yet to put it in). Despite the first two doses, they're still flashing heavily, though they've started eating a bit more.
I also noticed this morning my sunset gourami is becoming lethargic as well, but this is the only symptom he's exhibiting. Usually he's very quick to come up and say hi, or to stuff his face at feeding time. Instead he sits in the corner, under a plant, or against some
driftwood and ignores me completely. So either he's having an off day, he's sick, or I forgot it was his birthday (or something to make him equally mad at me).
Here begins the series of questions.
1. Could the Maracide be hurting my gourami? Should I put in the third dose that is due today?
2. If the Maracide hasn't been effective thus far for my loaches, should I try something else? I have some Coppersafe, but haven't added it yet as I've been concerned about it's effects on the other tankmates. These tankmates include:
2 bengal loaches
5 ottos
9 neon tetras
1 sunset gourami
3 mollys
2 eternally hiding catfish
several plants: anubias nanas and java ferns
a million snails (which I would be glad to get rid of; thus the loaches)
all of whom get along swimmingly
3. Is there another medication I should try?
Aquarium stats: 0ppm
ammonia and
nitrite, 20ppm
nitrate; temp 80*
Thanks for your help, I don't want to lose any of my babies if I can help it!
