| I need help.. ID fin condition on Platy, thanks Well maybe it was bound to happen.. I first need to say how vigilant I have been on the upkeep of my 29 gallon with adult female Platy and their fry. But one Platy has just shown some odd condition on her tail fin. Last night I spotted it for the first time and tried to isolate her and also get a hospital tank up and running which failed. I have looked up sites and can't find anything even similar to what this may be. Also if it is a type of fungus, how to treat with all the new born and young fry in the same tank. Any thoughts or anyone see this before on their fish? thanks for looking in advance.. |

Last night it was rounded 3 separate blotches and today it has turned almost solid half moon width ways. The light is bad on the tank right now, I can try for a better picture later. |

| Hi Mare,
I see the orange you are talking about. Is this on your original blue's and not a new one? Just in case it ended up being a mixed platy somehow. If it is on the original older blue, Im not sure what it can be. It doesnt look like fungus to me, as its not cottony etc. I know there is a yellow dusting fungus called 'velvet', not sure if that is whats going on? Or is it just a genetic thing, where color is developing on her? Its the only one in the tank that has it and she seems to be acting right and eating ok? Only signs of distress were when she went into the other tank right?
hmmm... maybe if you can get a close up photo maybe it will be clearer? |

| I can definatly see what mean about the yellow-ish ness o0n her stail (stunning girl btw!)
Personally, I'd be inclined to maybe say it has just been a colour change of some kind, as it's uniform and looks like part of the fin, but I wouldn't rule out some form of fungus. I've never had experience with velvet, but does it manifest itself as a gold-ish covering?
Good luck with her, she's gorgeous! |

velvet being a talc like dusting can come in grey, white or goldish coloring... The sick fish also exhibit scratching on items and clamped fins. |

| I see it now...and it does look like velvet....or can you get a microscope to look closer to see if things are moving on her tail? is that tiny eyes or just some black spots mixed in with the tannish color? |

| I would try to catch her again...use some tank water for her QT tank so the pH wont shock her and use the rest of your tss and keep a close eye on her for a few days...then you can medicate or go from there..if its velvet, it will effect her as far as eating, lethargic etc ...is she acting normal ? |

I'm sure if its velvet this can and will affect the whole tank. I feel bad about treating the tank. I will darken the tank some, maybe lower the water temp? To try to kill off any parasites that may be hanging around lurking on driftwood etc..( not wanting to treat the 29G)
Im checking into treatment options..before using the aqua-sol..Anyone use this product? thanks..... |

It may be.. or not, velvet, its so hard to tell.
Best of luck mare... ok... Ive napped this afternoon instead of doing the wc on the 55g, so Im off to go do that now... |

| yes I wouldnt jump to anything yet...it may just be something thats irritated her or even a birth defect that has recently shown up..the qt tank to watch her would be good for now...the fry will not make it through the treatment most are too sensitive for meds..and when my goldies had it, I had to use meds with copper in it...(it was 8 or so years ago so Im not totally sure on the name) |
