Fin Rot or Fin Nipping Silver Dollars

Hi All,

Please see the attached photos.

I am not sure if this is fin rot or just the SD's nipping at each other.

If it is fin rot please let me know the recommended treatment.

125 gal tank
5 SD
5 Platties
10 rainbowfish
4 green cory cats

pH 7.7
nitrates ~5-10ppm
ammonia 0ppm confirmed with test kit
chlorine 0ppm

fin rot can be caused by nipping..but its not something that just happens on its own..(fin rot that is) didnt the sd's have it when you got them? I remember a thread of you asking what it was or am im confused? LOL ...either way, fin rot can be fixed from prestine water changes, some stress coat and fish protector...if they are continuously being nipped, you are going to have to remove the nippers and if they came that way , it will heal with good water and diet

the fish did not have this when I purchased them, but I did notice them nipping each other and their fins were beat up shortly after I got them. The other 4 have healed just this one is still a little ragged. I just thought the fish would be better unless its the low fish in the hierarchy.

I will monitor and see if it gets any worse.

I was asking about the green corys BTW

thanks

oops sorry...I thought I had seen these sd's before ..I apologize if he isnt getting better , he probably is the low man and that may never change ...do you have another tank to heal him up and get him stronger and then maybe try to re introduce him? also, sd's are super skittish fish and make sure theres nothing sharp they could have caught their fins on as well...good luck

Hello. Silver Dollars will also get nippy towards each other close to mating time. Mine are at that point now...seeing a few nipped fins and chasing each other around. Too, their colors are changing and lots of black fading in and out. Brighter reds on some of the fins. Just thought I'd throw that in there.

it seems like it's only the dorsal fin that is ragged and not the tail fin.

My opinion is that it appears to be nipped and not fin rot.
