Popeye

Ok other fishy parents. I have a male dalmation lyretail who has popeye. He has it on one eye, and not the other. I think this is an injury, because I had just treated the tank for popeye. ( female sailfin had it ) I was catching a few prego's in my tank and I think he may have injured it. The way it looks tody, it may be lost. I was wondering if there is a alternative was to treat popeye. I dont get payed for 6 days, and I dont want him to suffer. He acts just fine, just with a relly funky eye.

popeye is usually caused from something in the waters parimeters...do you know your tank readings for ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate? clean water and daily changes with some stress coat should help him alot..if its an injury, the same will apply

All my level's are normal. . . I have stress coat, and I need to add some water, so I will add more for the injury. Could the swolen part have poped, and the eye ball be ok I dont want to chase him arround, and risk another injury, trying to look at it.

can you post your "normal" readings for us? being as stocked as you are, what are your water changing schedules like? have you seen the CAE bothering him at all? I dont know if the eye will be ok that is for you to decide...does he act like he can see?

Yes. he acts like he can see fine. Like I said. He acts fine. I do a partial water change when I change my filters. I Have verry chemical sensative fish in there, so I dont think it is chemicals. Also people need to know. My tank is NOT small. It is almost 6ft long and about 2ft tall. so there is a LOT of room.

Here are my stats.....

Amonia-- <0.02 PPM
Nitrate-- 20 ppm
Nitrite-0

changing the filters isnt necessary except for about once a year....you can just rinse the media in a bucket of water you remove from the tank...that way you arent getting rid of good bacteria..haivng ANY ammonia is not good...means the tank is in a mini cycle ..so the water isnt fine and just keep up with the partial water changes every day and look for either some prime, amquel+ or ammo lock to keep the ammonia safe for the fish while it goes thru the mini cycle...also keep using the stress coat unless you can find the amquel+ .....I dont think anyone said your tank was small so not sure where that is coming from ..but it is way overstocked...1 bala needs 55 gals as they get huge..2 in there is going to be tough especially with other fish ....goodluck with everything tho!

ok. I have a Seachem Ammonia alert on the inside of my tank, so I know what my levels are allways. It showan yellow( safe <0.02 ppm ) I just did an ammonia quick dip and it says, 0. I did 3 strips to make sure, and samee on all 3. As far as the sharks are consirned, I got them when we got the tank, back in janurary. They were both about 1 1/2 inches long. Now one is 2 1/2 inches and the other is about 3 1/2 inches. According to website I may have a male and a female. All the baby's are in seperate areas, so they dont take up tank space.
