Very sick discus'

Feeling helpless & desperate I come to you looking for (hopefully) some answers to help my partners fish (ie. Discus, pearl gourami, blue/yellow rams, Butterfly plecos & clown plecos) Most in need of immediate help are our discus.

I am no expert in keeping a fish-tank so bare with me please - I just need to do whatever I can to help the fish ...

In the last week or 2 some of our discus have become ill (all different symptoms it seems!!??), one even died (our latest edition to the tank, a small diamond discus who did undergo quarantine before 'entering' the main 400L tank - 45cm deep, 75cm high, 120cm long at 29,2 Cel deg. with plants & driftwood (has been thoroughly rinsed before going in to tank)

Total fish in tank: 10 discus, 4 pearl gourami, 4 rams, 2 butterfly plecos, 5 clown plecos.

Whilst most of our fish appear alright & healthy more are getting sick by the day it seems.

Last week a small white diamond discus died, it didn't seem to have any noticeable illnesses but yet it is dead,reasons unknown. Now our small yellow discus bought at the same time as the diamond has fallen ill & is without a doubt going to die - the state looks to me quite poor - listed below are the different symptoms of the different fish;

1/
the discus is showing open wounds on the head area, like the flesh is being eaten away!!?? We have put it in a quarantine tank and been medicating it with Metronidazole as the aquarium guy thought it be Hole-In-The-Head disease. Although slight improvement to the skin, it doesn't eat, keeps in one corner and the fins look to be either rotting away or been eaten.

Does he have hope or should be euthanize it, if so which way is better?

2/
about 2 months ago we bought 4 Blue Diamond Discus (I think they are called) 3 have grown big & strong, not showing any lack of appetite or being less active, but one has not grown at all, os keeping to himself most the time (hiding in the plants) & eating very little. He has a cloudy eye/blind eye.

Is this eye causing him not to grow? What is the best treatment? Will treatment affect the other fish?

3/
Our first discus purchases were 2 Red Dragons, 2 Marlboros & 2 orange (something starting with S,can't remember the name - looks something between a red dragon & a marlboro) Now one Red Dragon is clearly sick, symptoms:

white almost worm-looking things coming out of the skin around the eyes, head & it seems on the body. They vary in size resembling dots to actual white blemishes (pimple like) It keeps to itself, sits in one corner of the tank, doesn't really eat or interact. It doesn't seem to have any open wounds or lacerations, but at times looks to have slime or scales on its top-fin.

What is the best course of action, it looks as if 1 or 2 other discus are showing small white dots/blemishes - however they still eat and swim around.

What could it be, what is best treatment and how will it affect the other fish?

4/
Yesterday one of our 2 Yellow Rams nearly lost an eye it appeared. The eye nearly popped out for no reason but today it looks 'in place' however, head area is red (may be blood??) It looks like it has an open wound on top of the head, hard to see at it hides. It is keeping to itself or with another Blue Ram, not too sure if it is eating!!

I am really worried about the fish as is my partner, he has had fishtanks before for many years, but never discus. He is obviously very distressed about this whole thing and trying his best to figure out what is the problem. He is very careful with checking pH-levels, water temp. ammoniac, ater changes & flows etc, but if need be I will ask the exact numbers etc and post it (I don't know). All driftwood has been thoroughly rinsed before going in to the tank, however all the plants, driftwood etc has been in the tank since the beginning and tank had 2 weeks to settle before any fish were purchased. We have a huge water tank with water (added with something as the tap water is not good to put in directly) for the water changes.

On a good note - the 3 large Blue Diamond Discus + 3 other discus are showing no signs of any distress or health issues, neither are the Pearl Gouramis, 3 Rams, 2 Butterfly Plecos, the Clown Plecos I have seen all seem okay too and eat well (we had 10 rummy noses, now only 1 - I wonder if they have been eaten?). The tank looks fine, good water flow, 2 big filters, bit of algae on some of the plants but green & nice looking. Few small snails around the tank. We feed the fish a beef heart mixture with carrots I believe purchased from our aquarium store. We have also been adding some Melafix to the tank, an antibacterial liquid.

I do hope to see an end to this - I honestly can't bare to see the fish suffer although I don't know if they feel in the same way other animals would. Can someone shed a light to any of these problems before we loose the entire tank?? Much appreciated - Thank you!

Welcome to fishlore!
Wow, there's a lot going on here.
First off, what are your water parameters? i.e. ammonia, nitrite & nitrate
The white spots sound like ICH, but some symptoms also sound like calamus worms.
If you have an ammonia reading, the ulcers on the one discus may be from that.
Do you have any pics of these fish with the ailments?

I will get the water parameters when my partner gets home, I don't want to make any mistakes fiddling around with the test kits.

Photos should be attached now!? Thank you for your kind help!

Just read all the water parameters and they are exellent

Ammonia = 0
Nitrite NO2 = 0
Nitrate NO3 = 0

On top of all these issues, it now seems that 2 of our Blue Diamond Discus have JUST spawned!!!!!! They have laid some see-through roe/gel on one of the drift-wood logs and are very territorial (chasing every other fish away from the site) How can this be? Sick fish and spawning at the same time

Good morning and Welcome to Fish Lore. If you or your partner would be so kind as to fill out your aquarium information in your profile, it would really help others to help you more. I know we have some experienced Discus keepers that will be on and help you more. Personally my experience with Discus is not good so I can't offer much information there.
However, if your fish are showing signs of ICH (the fish will look like it's been sprinkled with salt) increase your water temperature to 85 degrees and leave it there for two weeks. Add additional air supply as warmer water requires more oxygen. Do some gravel vacuums to remove the ICH spores that fall from the fish and into the substrate. If it is ICH the entire tank has to be treated so there is no need for quarantine.
So sorry to hear that your fish are ill. Best of luck for a speedy recovery!

Thank you for your advise, it is much appreciated!

The guy at the aquarium store (where we bought our discus) believes it is Hole-in-the-head disease. The small Blue Diamond who has turned darker in color and not grown at all def. has cloudy eye, but most likely also intestinal worms. We have tried to treat it for this before but without luck! We don't believe it is ICH as it doesn't match the description of 'sprinkled salt'. The sick gold ram we have euthanized as it just laid on the bottom of the tank looking miserable (think it had Pop-Eye??!!) The young yellow discus with head laceration is looking very poor, so have decided to euthanize it to end its miseries.

The Red Dragon + Rafflesia showing signs of maybe Hole-in-the-head we will put in separate tank and medicate. Hope this helps!?

Our Blur Diamonds had indeed spawned this afternoon and after hours of 'fighting off other fish' the eggs are now gone believed to have been eaten, possibly by the plecos hiding inside the drift wood!?

All of our problems started when we got the 2 new discus (now dead) ... hopefully we can save the tank from whatever is causing the fish to be sick.

I know it's sad. I had an awful time many years ago with Discus and lost 15 of them. I have to admit I just gave up. Some people do have great success with them. They are truly a majestic species. Hang on for some more responses.
