| | Fish Helper | Please help, sick platy! Yesterday I noticed that one of my platies has a bulging eye and a white patch on his body (same side as bad eye). He is acting *fine* still trying to mate with the females, eating, etc. His eye looks a bit better today and I I raised the temp to 82 in case it is ICH.
I am not sure if I should do anything else for him...such as quarantine? Here are some pics: |

| | Moderator | looks either like ammonia or a boo boo from something in the tank....are you doing daily water changes with some ammonia/ nitrite detoxifier? thats very very important with his sores...amquel+, prime, or ammo lock is great for that...one will do the job ....adding stress coat+ every other day will also help heal him up....cycling with fish is hard on them and I hope things get better! |

| | Fish Helper | Shawnie...first off, thank you for your quick response!
I did a 50% water change last night and I have been using Prime all along. The tank has been cycled for about a week now. I seeded it from my original tank, which has now also cycled because it is no longer overstocked. The readings have been 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite and 5 nitrate consistenly for about a week.
However, he was in my original tank (up until 6/23) that had the high levels of ammonia despite water changes...could that have caused this to come on now?
I don't have any stress coat, but I have some Top Fin water conditioner that I've used in addition to the Prime which says that it aids in slime coat, etc. I can certainly pick up some stress coat tomorrow!
I have 4 female platies in this tank with him and another male so it is certainly possible that the other male nipped him one. Or one of the females!
I can put him over in my male tank to avoid further injuries, but I dont know if I should wait until he is well or not?
Also, should I put the heat back down to normal (78) since it doesn't really look like Ich?
Planning on doing a 25% water change tonight.... |

| | Moderator | your welcome and updating your aquarium info will help a ton so information isnt repeated
im glad the tanks cycled and yes it could be a lasting effect of the ammonia..ive seen fish pass a week or so after a cycle but the ammonia works its ways into the fish in the meantime....im not familiar with top fin and maybe another member is.....it sounds like it might be the same as stress coat so hopefully someone will chime in to help that has used it...its the rebuilding of his slimecoat that is needed for sure....his eye looks like it was from the process of going through the cycle....and prestine water will help that also....it doesnt look like ich to me at all so putting the temps back down is fine.....do you have a breeder box where he can stay for a bit until he starts to show signs of getting better? that might help target feeding him to build his strength and also able to make sure he has prestine water....goodluck! |

| | Fish Helper | I am definitely going to be OCD about the water since that seems to be key. I've been doing small water changes every day now that I got that amazing device that hooks up to the sink! Last night it was a 50% change and tonight I will do 25% unless I should do more?
I have a little box that floats in the tank for catching fry, but thought it might stress him out? I also have an empty 2.5g tank but it hasn't got a filter or heater....
I've been adding my test results to my aquarium info each time...he is in the 55g tank which cycled first.
You guys are so great with your helpful suggestions and support....I really do appreciate it, especially when I am so worried about one of my babies! |

| | Moderator | for now, the water changes you are doing should be ok...I just hope someone that has used top fin can chime in..get some extra media going into the filter of your established tank...you can buy some pillow stuffin at walmart thats 100% polyester and no perfumes or dyes, and use that ..its cheap and you get a ton in a bag for like $4...that way if you ever need a QT tank, you can use some of that media for any filter and have it set up asap...buying an extra small filter/heater for the 2.5 will be a great move for a qt tank as well and you will have the media ready at all times to switch over...for now, id leave him be and just be vigorous on the water changes...25% is great and no need for more now that you are cycled....and id only do it a couple times a week if the parimeters are good....its the conditioner thats going to help as well and I think you can relax a bit if hes eating and doing all his fishy things |

| | Fish Helper | Shawnie, I will get some extra medium for that purpose. I upgraded my betta to a 5g and this is his old tank...didn't know they made filters/heater that small!
As I type this he is darting around the tank and siding up to his favorite female...certainly doesn't seem worse for the wear!
I just worry so much! |

| | Fish Keeper | Hi..sorry to see your platy's injuries. I don't think your being over-worrisome. I would be concerned if my platy had those symptoms too. I wouldn't be so sure that it is caused by a fight either. The picture shows a few spots and white on its eye, also the platy thats healthy swimming alongside also appears to have a white dot on its tail fin? Have you seen any behavior where they seem to be swiping along decorations or plants with their gills (or sides of mouth)?
I see that your tank readings went from nitrate 5, to todays nitrate reading at 0, have you gone thru a mini-cycle?
Also the 2 males to 2 females, will cause a lot more stress and aggression in the tank. imo I would isolate him and treat him with pristine water, stress coat+, and see how he progresses...I hope he feels better soon |

| | Fish Helper | Mare, the outside of my tank has tons of water spots, which is what looks like the white spots in the pics. That is why I tried to circle the abnormal spots. Just to be sure, I just took a good hard look at EVERY fish in that tank to inspect it for white spots and I found one tiny dot on the forehead of the female platy I showed in the above pic. I can only see it when she is looking at me straight on, but since it *could* be Ich, I think I am going to leave the tank temp up! I will try and get a picture of it.
None of them are rubbing against anything...well the males are siding up to the females but that is their mating dance. My ratio of males to females is still high because I was moving the males over to the other tank one day at a time and this sick boy was set to go yesterday...didn't want to move him once I saw he was ill. My plans are to only have the white mickey mouse male in with the 4 girls.
As for a mini-cycle, I was wondering that myself. The nitrates were 5 yesterday before the 50% water change but they were 0 today. I did add 3 fish on Tuesday ( 1 glowfish, 2 balloon mollies) so perhaps that caused it?
I am going to get the camera out so I can document his progress since this morning and try and capture the small dot on the female. Poor boy is going to swim in the other direction when he sees me coming! |

So many times I have looked back at my picts to see the size change or any color change. I hear you on the water spots. I now wipe clean the tank glass before any picture taking, lol. Im glad to hear that its the glass and not your platys. It good you waited on moving him. The males alone seem so much more aggressive without the distraction of the females. I hope it works out well, and I would also leave the temp up just in case.. If things get worse quickly, then I would decrease the water temp slowly. As it may possibly be bacterial, and the warmer water wouldn't be good. Keep us posted on his progress |

| | Fish Helper | My platy continues to improve! His eye looks almost normal and his white patch is much smaller!!
Here are some pics of him from today, I gave them an algae wafer and I guess it is easy to see how he would have had a chunk bitten off of him!
I love the pic that shows his eye but also has my favorite platy Sunburst in mid-chomp of the algae...nice lips! |
