my tank has neon tetra disease - should i care?

i recently purchased 3 neon tetras, who looked very healthy until they all died within 48 hours. i found them on the floor or stuck in the filter. i'm guessing the infamous neon tetra disease. if i don't plan on purchasing any more tetras, do i need to do anything? or can i just leave my tank as is.... since apparently the disease won't affect any other fish.

my tank is a hand me down, so the water is in great condition and i just changed the filter. so i don't think it's a water issue.

What were or are your parameters? pH, nitrite, nitrate, ammonia? It sounds to me like new tank syndrome.

Neon tetra desease isn't limited to neons.
Are you sure it was NTD and not an aggressive fish in the wrong size tank?

not aggressive fish... they were totally unbothered. the parameters were as follows:
nitrate: 0
nitrite: 0
chlorine: 0
hardness: 75 (soft)
alkalinity: 80 (moderate)
pH: 7.2 (neutral)

What's your ammonia coming in at? Unless you have live plants in the tank, it's not looking like the tank has ever cycled.

Having 0 nitrate may indicate the tank isn't cycled. Do you know the ammonia reading?

don't know how to test for ammonia. my tank was a hand-me-down, all i did was add the tetras to it. so i assumed the previous users had done the appropriate start-up stuff. i'm no expert, but i'm not sure the nitrogen cycling could be responsible for 3 dead fish in 48 hours.

You could have 3+ dead fish in 24 hours if the tank isn't cycled. The new fish introduce a bioload to the tank that its not prepared for. Thus giving you a huge spike in ammonia that is highly toxic to fish.

Whatever test kit you got should have an ammonia test with it.

Hi fishy...tetras especially arent good for uncycled tanks and if ammonia is present, they can die within hours.......what test kit are you using that doesnt have ammonia test? is it the strips? I dont think its ntd but an uncycled tank as others said.....if you can , find yourself an API liquid master kit..it has everything you need and will do 100s of tests....that way you will always know whats going on....until you know for sure, I wouldnt add anymore fish.....once you can get a reliable test for ammonia, nitrites, and nitrates, we can definitely help you move on with the tank...changing the filter is almost a guarantee you arent cycled as thats where the beneficial bacteria is and you are going to have to start over no matter what

A side note on what shawnie has said, sometimes you will need to change the filter but not as often as the manufacturers say you do. They tell you to change your filter every three months (give or take) but in all actuallity the only time you ever swap out your filter is during two events.

1) you had to medicate your tank; after the treatment is done add a new filter with activated carbon this will react with the meds and remove it from the water entirely this is especially usefull with things like malcryn since it is a broad range antibiotic that if can if used improperly or for too long damage the nitrogen cycle.

2) the only other time that I can think of to change your filter is when your media bag is falling appart. When I had my 10 gallon going I'd start to find pieces of fiber floating in my tank which meant it was time to change the bag, you may go through a very small mini cycle but usually by that point your cycle is well established.

now onto what everyone else is saying, Unless you have live plants, I have to agree you don't have a cycled tank it was probably new tank syndrome (not neon tetra syndrome) that did your poor fish in also i've never heard of neon tetra sysdrome where did you find that one?

again, you are going to have to cycle the tank, don't worry it happens to everyone who gets a new tank, heck, some of us who have established tanks suddenly have to cycle a tank again as well, anyway, cycle your tank and get a test kit with ammonia, that is the most poisonous ion to fish I don't care what kind of fish they are!! and also by knowing your ammonia levels you can tell what age your cycle is in. Best of luck and let us know if you need any other help,
