| Guppies Dying need help Hi
I have two black mollies, three red wagtail patties and had four fancy guppies. The pet store that I bought them at said they had a two week return policy becuase sometimes guppies die.
Well the mollies and the patties are doing great. However, the guppies are doing so well at all. I orginally bought three female and one male fancy guppy. So that the male would have lots of females to bug and not chase one too much.
The original three females died all whitin two days of each other, so I took them back. The lady at the store checked them over and said that they did not have any desease or anything and that they just died. So I got three replacements for lucky (my husband named him that because he has three mates). As of this morning all of his replacements have died. The first two looked like the other three but the third one (sunrise) developed red blotches and lines on her, it almost looks like bleeding under the skin. I noticed the marks last night so I placed her in my quarantine tank but she died.
Now lucky it getting the same marks.
Can anyone please tell me if you kow what these marks are and why the guppies keep dieing. Last edited by tanyanootchtai; May 18th, 2009 at 08:58 AM.

| 15 Gallon tank set up for about a month, I have tested everything in the water and all the levels are good. I also cycled the system before adding the new fish and boiled and soaked all the new rocks and decorations before adding them so I am sure that no bacteria was on anything. |

| Thats good to hear As your other fish are doing fine I would hazard a guess that the Guppies are bad stock. This is happening more and more these days, mainly due to heavy interbreeding which weakens the Guppies immune system. I would recommend not adding any more fish for a week or two, just to be sure that your other fish are fine. |

| Tayna, I have given up on guppies, just recently. Too bad, cause I really like to watch them. I've lost 5 (6 by the end of today).

| I confess, I did not see red marks on my guppies. i would keep an eye on the other fish-as Im sure you already are but it really does sound to me as though it's the guppies and the breeding process.

I'm really sorry about your guppies.
Can you post the exact readings for ammonia, nitrite and nitrate? |

It sounds like it could be hemorrhagic septicemia, which appears as red streaks in finnage or red blotches on the body of the fish. It's an internal bacterial infection and is treated with antibiotics, such as tetracyclin, or Maracyn2 by Mardel.
This is what it looks like. (I found this photo on the net).
Are the red blotches similar to what your guppy exhibited? |

Are the red blotches similar to what your guppy exhibited? | If symtoms were similar, would use Kanamyacin (dont know if still avail in small quantity) than other Two antibiotics. TC would be my last choice since it has been overused in hobby. OxyTC (terramycin) or other derivatives of TC did/does work better when optimal water conditions are given. Sometimes just by improving water condition will do the trick depending on stage of infection.
How about holding new batch in large, well aerated/circulated contraption/trap for few days in the tank before releasing. This will give new batch a fighting chance since will adjust to new tank w/o any harassment(stress factor).
Wishing better luck with next batch. |

You are showing NitrIte reading. You need to do a water change to get that out. That's not good. Unless it's a typo. |

| The red marks do not look like that, they almost look like spider viens would look like on a persons legs. However, I am pleased to say that the other fish are all doing well and my Molly has had two babies so far. |
