| Sick Platy ammonia:0 nitrite:0 nitrate:0 pH: 7.6 Temp: 76
I have a question about my platy, its acting out of the ordinary. It stays at the top and the gills are silver, its my Red Wag platy. Its light in coloration. My other fish are acting fine.
I have lost two other platys in the last two days...
Also I have two new platys and tetras in the tank, because I took my guppys back to the store. The guppys were harassing the platys really bad... I did have females and males, but they didnt mess with each other...they chased the platys around nonstop. Do you think the platys might have gotten stressed? and thats why they are dying?
Thank you for any help!

| welcome to fishlore autum!! im so sorry for the loss of your fish
do you have live plants in the tank? for a cycled tank, you should have nitrates ...unless you have real plants..what test kit do you use ?
for a fish to hang out at the top for air, its usually ammonia...if you can find some prime, id do daily water changes for a few days to see if he improves...and if you dont have live plants, you need to do daily changes with prime until you have 0 ammonia, 0 nitrites, and 5-20 nitrates.... |

I do not have any live plants in my aquarium at all... Excuse me on the wrong ph parameters, but its at 8.4 high ph. Could it be that? if so what can I use to get it down, and keep it down? I researched its suppose to be between 7 and 8.
Thanks,

| here is the breakthrough we needed...your fish are suffering because your tank has not been cycled. I had the same problem. when i started and knew a fraction about the cycle, all of my mollys died except one. They died of swim bladder.
i think that because your fish is at the top of the water, there is not enough oxygen in the tank. At your LFS, they should have nlock of oxygen that you can put in the water which will dissolve. this will provide your tank with more oxygen.
this is just one of the reasons why your fish is suffering. It may notbe the exact thing but i suggest that you buy and oxygen block or even do 50% daily water changes for a week. |

It is Completely Cycled, and I only do 20 percent every two weeks...which makes my water parameters perfect daily. Thank you, but I have been told several times my tank isnt cycled by this forum...I originally go with fishgeek forum, but its not working... anyways... I found out everything I needed to know by researching.... I am going to another forum.
Thank you,

| how often are you doing water changes and when was the 20 gallon set up? if it was set up a few months ago then you're already through the cycle, but you should be getting a nitrate reading.
you can add driftwood to lower your pH, it will release tannins which will bring the pH down naturally and slowly so the change won't stress your fish. i wouldn't suggest using any chemicals to try to change it, as it will be very difficult to keep your pH stable doing that and that is more stressful on your fish than a pH that is too high or too low. |
