Fin rot?

i got 8 new coral platys(solid red short stubby guys) for a new 20 gal. tank yesterday. All seemed fine in the store and when i got home. later that night i noticed that on 3 of the 8 fish one of their side fins(cant remember the correct term for the fin at this time) were not working. they seem to be in good health, but have noticed some of the others picking on them at certain times(feeding, etc).

is this fin rot? and do i need to pull those guys from my tank? they eat in all but, tend to hang out at the bottom of the tank otherwise.

any ideas will be much appreciated

And please let me know if you need more info in order to come up with ideas

Thanks...

when you say that the fin isnt working, do you mean that your fish aren't using that fin? does it look paralyzed?

do you have water parameters for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate?

sorry was a little vague. When i said not working i should have said that they are much smaller and not spread out, but they do attempt to use them. Also on one of them i noticed today dorsal fin is immobile as well(but seem to swim fine)

crazy thing is i just went home for lunch and noticed that one of them are missing. i looked everywhere in the tank. it was for the most part a quick glance but no fishie.

They "appeared" to look fine in the bag once i bout them, but they had them in a tank with about 50+ others so it was hard to tell. i know now to have the owner choose the fish and not the teenage assistant..

Also what is a good male to female ratio for these guys i have/had 2 males and 6 females...

Sorry you have something going on with your fish, it sounds like maybe just fin-nipping going on.

Signs of fin-rot are edges of fins turn white, fins fray, base of fin may be enflamed and entire fin may rot away.

yea im going back up to the store tonight and see what they can do for me. i think i may just go ahead and separate the ones that have issues and replace according. i think that it just may be fin nipping but not sure. like i said the other healthy looking ones seem to run the ones that have fin issues around especially during feeding. and they hang out closer to the bottom of the tank.

i checked all parameters in my tank and all is well so its not a temp. thing etc...
