My Zebra Danio left fin disabled or damaged...

Dear All,

One of my Danio was behaving strange like staying at the bottom. very inactive. But when i tap on the glass it moves quite agile.
I took it out of the tank to investigate on a hospital tank. I found that the left fin looks disabled. not open out like a fan.

Will fish recover from this? Is this a bacteria or fungus attack and will it recover? The other tank mates are ok.

Regards
Anthony

Hi Anthony
I'm really sorry about your Danio.
When something goes wrong the first thing to check would be the ammonia, nitrite and nitrate levels. If you could post them, that would be great.
What other fish and how many are in your tank?
Any other symptoms like breathing heavy, red gills?

Hi Lucy,

I do not have any test kits. but this is a fully cycled tank all the other fishes are healthy including the other zebra. there are also 3 Platys in the tank. some java moss and one nana.

Weekly water changes. The Zebra seem to be happy in the hospital tank and swimming around. Does one fin cause fishes to stay at the bottom? I am hoping that it recuperate in the hospital tank and i can release it back with her friends. I am not sure if fin will recover. not sure if it is Bacteria or fungus. I am now using Waterlife anti fungus and bacteria.... Myxazin

Regards,
Anthony

Could he have injured himself on something in the tank or maybe an attack from another fish?
23 Liters is a pretty small tank, I'd still be interested to know what other and how many kinds of fish are in there along with your water readings.

A fungus would appear as fuzzy patches. A bacterial infection could be mistaken for a fungus or red patches...a variety of symptoms. Not sure if it would look like a disabled fin.

Can you post a pic?

Total of 5 fishes.... 3 platys and 2 zebras. I guess it must be injuries because i find their mating ritual very violent. I seem to have gotten worst in the hospital tank. When i put it back to the main tank it looks better. But still lethargic. I think it will not survive this....
Sigh.....

Oh about the left fin.... it just not helping the fish to swim... seems to be "stucked"... it swims with the 2nd half of the body drooping.... like there is no strength to lift the tail half up....

You might want to consider a larger tank. The fish you have are more suited for at least a 10g but a 15 would suit you better because the danios are schooling fish and prefer to be in groups of at least 6.
Sometimes aggression can occur when fish are kept in an improper tank or school size.
