sick neon tetra

Hello,

I have a 10 gallon tank with 4 neon tetras and 2 cherry barbs. The water levels are good and I take care to keep up with the water changes. For the last three days, one of the tetras has been staying at the top, barely swimming and I don't think it's been eating. Also, it's mouth is opening and closing really fast like it can't breath. Is there anything I can do? I don't know anything about fish disease and I really don't want my fish to die.

Thanks,

Amanda

i'm sorry your neon isn't feeling well

that sounds like either ammonia poisoning or a lack of oxygen, i would double check your ammonia levels and add an air stone or bubble wand if you have one.

do his gills look red? is there any discoloration? does he look paler than normal? did you cycle the tank with our without your fish? have you added anything new recently?

Thanks for your response.

He is paler than normal so yes, there is some discoloration. I don't see how it could be ammonia poisoning because the day before he got sick I did a water change. Also, I have several plants in the tank, so shouldn't the oxygen level be high? I cycled the tank with biospira, with fish in the tank. The only change that I've noticed is the growth of two snails that hitched a ride on one of my plants. They could be breeding but I don't really know what to look for.

have you added any medications to the tank recently? that could account for lower oxygen levels as well.

here are some links that have answers that may help you

there are some more tabs if none of those symptoms really fit as well

I have not added any medications. I am going to do a water change when I get home and see if that helps.
