So I started treating my fully cycled 29g tank because my swordtail platy appeared to have mouth rot. My pet shop recommended
API Triple Sulfa which they use themselves - I asked whether it would damage my cycle and he didn't seem to know - just that they use it....
My whole saga started when my tank having a
pH of 6.5,
GH 12, am 0, ni 0, and na 5.
I had 6 platies at the time, swapped 2 of them for 2 different types of platies and also got 6 neon tetras.
My ph started to fall and I started to lose the neons so I took my
driftwood out and did 20%
water change with vacuum.
Then my swordtail platy showed signs of mouth rot so I went got this Triple sulfa stuff and began treating - it says 2 sachets per day for 2 days then on 3rd day do 25% water change - repeat 4 times.
on day 3 I did my water change and tested but got ph5, gh7 (water hardness seems effected), am 0.25 ni 0 and na 5. So obviously it is messing up my cycle. By now the swordtail had stopped eating. Now I am adding amquel as well to try to reduce the
ammonia.
But I continued and did 2 more days. The water is looking a little cloudier, I only have 1 neon tetris left and my swordtail died last night - today should be the water change day and I have 2 more rounds to go.
It seems to have done more damage than good - and certainly did nothing to cure my swordtail - he grew progressively more ill over the course of the dose.....does anyone have any positive experience with this med? To be frank I am a bit p*****d off.
So I was thinking I should stop dosing, do a big waterchange today, allow the cycle to repair (poor fish) adding amquel to try to limit the effects and only after it has stablised, add new fish.....what do you think, is that the right course of action? I don't think I will use this product again.
