| Perhaps its Parasites... I posted a thread earlier about my gourami. I think she might still be sick. She is losing color on her tail, and her skin is sort of translucent, I can see her organs and stuff. Also- I think she may have pop eye, but I don't really know, I'll get a picture up. She also lies sideways at the top of the tank sometimes. Her poo is really stringy and I don't think she's eating. She doesn't explore anymore and doesn't come to the front of the tank to beg when she sees me. My tank is cycled, temperature is about 76. Other tank mates are another honey gourami and 4 brochis splendens. Everyone else is looking really healthy, although I did recently lose a cory, not sure why, but he was really stressed from being in to small a school, and he had fin rot. But he had the same sort of behavior issues as she does, just in a different region of the tank. And he went to the top to gulp air, which I think she does too. Any ideas?
Pictures- the one that shows her whole body was taken from the top of the the tank, and the one with a healthy looking fish is her a while ago, so you can see what her colors used to be like. And the close up is just showing how see-through she is. Last edited by MeGustaUnaPez926; February 22nd, 2009 at 07:07 PM.

| Hi, I don't know if I can help you but I sure do sympathize - I'm really sorry your gourami's not well. If the poo is white and stringy to me that means parasites, but the inability to balance may mean something else. Can you isolate her at all in a QT?
I went through this link when my fish were sick and found it helped a lot: http://www.fishyfarmacy.com/fish_diseases/
Hope someone who's more experienced comes along soon! good luck! |

| oh no i'd quarantine and dose with jungle tabs for parasites. if that doesnt start to work soon then i'd try maracyn and maracyn 2 dosed together for gram positive and negative bacteria.
one other thing you may way to consider is iridovirus, i dont know how much it's been occurring recently but it was apparently a pretty big problem a while back Dwarf Guorami, Bettas and Iridovirus |

| Okay, thanks so much, guys. The poo is super stringy, some parts are brown, and some parts are so thin I can't tell. She is in quarantine now, and
Oh my gosh, just looked at her, she's lying flat on her side on the bottom, no wait, no she's going to the top, she swims completely vertical, and is getting pushed around by the filter steam, poor baby...
I'm going to Petco tonight, I have Macaryn, should I buy M. 2 and the jungle tablets?
Thanks for your help... Oh, and she's not eating, should I get some bloodworms to maybe entice her a little bit? |

| yeah i'd get the M2 and jungle, now that i think about it the parasite treatment from jungle may be liquid as opposed to the tabs, so don't let that throw you off, still made by the same company.
i'd definitely try to feed some bloodworms, maybe soak them in garlic juice to try to entice her to eat them more? |

| you're welcome, i'm sorry about your gourami i normally don't like to use meds unless i know exactly what's going on but with your fish in such bad shape it may be worth it to medicate rather than not and do everything that you can |

| Okay, I'm back. That cost me 36 big ones! And I'm stingy, so this had better work. I have her floating in a little tupperware thing, should I turn off the filter (so she can swim) or dose that? And how soon should I feed her? And should I put in all the medicine at once, or just the parasite stuff (it was tablets BTW)?
EDIT- and one tablet per 10 gallons, its a five, would you recommend over dosing? |

| i'd leave the filter on but maybe rubber band a piece of filter media to the output to help her swim better. i'd just try the parasite medicine first for at least a few days, i'm not sure how all three medicines together would do. |

| I wouldn't do all the meds at once - I had a bad experience when I did that...
I just finished a course of Maracyn (alone, before I knew it's good to dose for gram + and gram -). You just dump the powder in the tank, don't need to do anything else. You do that for 5 days and then do a big wc. When my fish were being treated they got really lethargic and I was pretty worried, I figured it wasn't working. Yesterday was day 5 and so today I did the big wc, and well! did they ever perk up! it's so very good to see them swimming again! I'm sure yours will have just as great a recovery
I just ordered from Big Al's a box of API's Furan-2 I believe it's called. I hope I won't need it for these fish but I wanted to have it on hand. It's said to be a full spectrum antibiotic that won't harm the biofilter for both gram + AND gram -. I was pretty jazzed that it would come together like that. Maybe as a suggestion for future use.
Hope your little one gets all better soon! |

| Yes, I've used maracyn before. I have her in a net at the top of the tank so she can get some air, and still have all the medicated water around her. She's just sort of resting, but at least she's not flipping out. I put in the first tablet, so we'll see how things go. And that medicine sounds nice, how much does it cost? Here its 7 bucks for macaryn, and 20 for macaryn 2, so if thats a better deal I may consider it for future use. |

| I got it from Big Al's (Canadian) and paid $11.99 CAD - there's 10 packets in the box and I believe each one doses 10g the same as Mardel's products. Might be available at Petsmart too. |

| Wow, thats a good deal, thanks for the information! She's not making any progress yet, but she's not dead either, so I guess I should count my blessings. I'll update in the morning. I'm getting up early to do a water change before school. I would have done it tonight, but I had major homework in every subject, plus this fish thing, so I'm kind of whipped out. |

| Um, shes still alive! So thats good... She doesn't exactly move, I have her sitting in a net at the top of the tank so she doesn't drown, and so the current from the filter doesn't hurt her. She'll turn around like once a day, but doesn't move otherwise, even when I come up to the tank. And she's still not eating. Its been two days since her last medication (Jungle parasite clear) It hasn't hurt her, but I can't tell if it's helping. Today would be the day I'd dose again, should I keep going with that, or should and switch to maracyn and maracyn2? If she doesn't improve anymore with the jungle stuff, I'm starting m and m2 on friday, because your supposed to dose in 2 day increments. What do you guys think is a good idea? |

| i think your idea is a good one, if she doesnt improve at all by friday just go for the maracyn and maracyn 2 |

| Okay, I just did the required 25% water change. I had to take her out and put her in a cup to do this, I just didn't think that I would be able to hold the net she was in at the water level while changing the water, especially since I need to hold it steady, so not to scare her. I noticed she was trying to swim while in the cup, it was odd because she can mover the upper half of her body, she's flapping her fins and whatnot, but she can't get her tail off the ground. Oh well, I'll dose her again, maybe she'll gain strength. |

| Well, she passed this morning. I'm really upset, I thought she just might make it... I'm not sure if it was because the medicine didn't work or she hadn't eaten in like a week. I'm going to keep the quarantine tank up, just in case it happens to anyone else. Nobodies showing signs yet, though so I'm hoping they're all okay.
Rest in peace, Lady Florence, I'll never forget you... |
