ich in my quarantine tank

well i'm new to all this but ive been reading alot and do more than enough to keep my fish happy, but i have one problem...ICH. when i bought the flowerhorn from my local LFS it looked fine i brought it home and put it in my quarantine tank and let him/her rest for a few days. the i woke up one morning and found him riddled with ich/whitespot. i have turned up the temp to 86 and started day 2 of my medication rid-ich. the quarantime tank is a little 8 and a half gallon tank wit one h.o.t. filter. does this sound like i'm going about this in the right way or am i doing something wrong? help with info is anyone can..thanks

Hi welcome to Fish Lore

Thank goodness for quaratine tanks!
You're on the right track. 86F is a little high. I'd slowly lower it to 83/84F. That temp will kill the ich. Leave it there for at least 2 weeks. Increase aeration to make up for lower oxygen in warmer water. Do a thorough gravel vac to pick up the dead spores.

Good luck!

Personally, I'd skip the salt. Depending on how bad the ich is the higher temp will kill it. If it's real bad, the meds will take care of it.

Another thing, make sure you have no carbon in the filter - it will negate the meds
