Sudden Illness in Neon Tetra

When I fed the fish tonight, I immediately noticed that one of my neon tetras did not look right. It's anus is a sort of pinkish red color, and it sticks out a lot. It doesn't have any other symptoms, and it was eating fine, like the other fish. It looked perfectly healthy when I fed them this morning. Any ideas on what's wrong? Any way I can treat it? I don't have much on hand, just Pimafix, Melafix, Vitachem, Stress Coat +, and a jar of garlic.

The 30 gallon tank is not cycled yet (I added fish before doing research), it's been almost 3 months and the ammonia is still at .25. nitrite is 0, and nitrate is 5. It's been a few days since the last water change, I didn't have time to do one yesterday like I'd planned.

The other fish in the tank are another neon, 5 glowlights, and a male guppy. I can take pictures tomorrow, if needed. Thanks!

Well, are you sure the anus is the thing sticking out? it reminds me a lot of this, unfortunately:

My experience with Camallanus worms

try to follow the links and see if that is what it looks like.

Good Luck!

Here are some pictures, does this look like camallanus? I hope it isn't... There aren't any worms, it's just all red and swollen.

seriously, that does not look good.

I would get some Maryacin 2 ASAP. If it is a bacterial infection, it will kill it.

Gosh, I hope someone with more experience comes by soon... and nop. It does not look like camallanus to me...

Okay, I'll get some Maracyn 2. I've been meaning to go out to get more stress coat anyways, I'll see if my parents can take me out today. Thanks for the help!

I got the Maracyn 2(and a betta!) and treated the tank. It doesn't look any better yet, but I hope the meds will help.

Looks more like ammonia burn-start changing water 50% daily for 3-4 days and get you ammania down to "0" I would not add anymore fish until your tank is cycled and levels are WNL...good luck

Although pics are not clear, could be Argulus. google for Argulus to see if it is/not!!
They attached to body. Have seen Camallanus on fish and confirmed w/ Microscope but did not occurred that often, mostly with livebearer. Never seen them on Neons personally. Have seen on numerous occassion that Neon are infected w/ such parasites due to how they were raised in Farms (unsanitary facilities, using natural water rather than treated water, etc).

If Argulus or Camallanus (internal worm), antibiotics such as Maracyn/Maracyn 2 will not do anything.

Google for info for both to ID and treat properly.

Unnecessary use of Antibiotic/other medication will produce more harms to, not just your fish, but to our environment (Microbes/parasite might build resistance to over use of remedy & also will disturb necessary life form in Sewer).

It is true that early recognition and proper treatment is essential but always do research as much as you can before decision is made(Google for pictures/images of fish dieases which can help you in ID the problems).

From reading your post, you may be a student. Since you were able to post on our forum, you could do plenty of research online to obtain info which will definitely help you in fish keepingdown the road.

Glad to have young person who are also interested in fish keeping, not just on electronic games.
My children have used water related Subjects to do their Science Projects when they were in Grammar School w/ great success. Just a thought!!!

Good Luck w/ your fish and keep us posted.

Unfortunately, my neon died. I treated with Maracyn 2, but it didn't have much of an effect. It seemed to get a little better the first couple of days, but then it worsened.

It was definitely not argulus or any other external parasite. I'm still not quite sure what it was, but I'm pretty certain it had to to with the cycle, and it doesn't seem to be contagious.

All of my other fish are healthy now, except for a glowlight tetra who has a red patch at the base of one of her fins. I think this is also from the cycle. I've stepped up the water changes with stress coat +, it's gotten better but is not completely healed yet.

Cerianthus, yes, I'm a student I'm in 9th grade right now. Good point on the researching, I'll be more thorough when diagnosing in the future.

Glad to hear that. It seems more and more parents are working nowdays, especially in NYC. I remember going back 20 yrs, LFS usued to sell ltons of 10 G Starter Kits for X-mas. Form what I've been hearing locally nowdays, due to drop in sales, some dont even have 10G Starter Kits on display over the Holiday. I see that more and more stores are targetting grown-ups w/ high-tech/fancy Set-ups (Nano, etc).
Spoke to few owners to realized that because of working status of both parents, parents are trying to make it easier for both by giving what children want (and I am no different to some degree) which is what their friends have/wants. You dont want your children to be the only one among their friends w/ Rock Band, etc. LOL. And you know what, they are NOT cheap.

I believe deep in my heart that when young ones are raised around fish and get involved with fish as they grow, they usually learn to respect other life forms. I feel that someone who will respect other life entitities are USUALLY kind to people.

Hope to see more and more young people on this forum!!
