Raise temperature to treat fungus?

My balloon molly seems to have some fungus on him. I went to the LFS to get some medication. Instead of selling me stuff, LFS people told me to increase the tank temperature slowly to 87°F for a few days and the fungus would be gone. Is this a good way to treat fungus. I used 4 days to get to 87F and maintained for one day now. How long should I keep the temperature?

No way!! It might get worse at higher temp. Although I've experienced exposing molly to such temp, I don't think it was good idea. Move it to QT to treat with proper remedies on the market ( personally prefer specific Med by Aquatronic) or dipped in 5% Salt solution for one to two minutes.
If the cottony growth is large enough, can pick it off and apply Bacitracin ointment on the infected area. Had great success treating many fish this way including one I catch to keep at home.
Higher temp will probably fasten the growth of fungus and even cause secondary infections.
Hope you did not expose the rest of fish to this temp. Always separate the sick one from healthy and apply treatment to sick fish only in QT.

You can try Rid Fungus.

To my knowledge, higher temperatures are only to treat ICH

Cerianthus has the right answer! Fungus generally grows faster in higher temps. This is the reason that many bettas suffer from fungal infections: they're used to warmer water than most tropical fish, and the heat speeds fungal infections.

I'd go with the Rid-Fungus that PinkFloydPuffer suggested, or PimaFix (an herbal remedy that tends to be less harsh than meds, though it can be really bad for labyrinth fish).

I should know better not to listen to lfs. I hope I still have chance to fix it.
