| Something wrong with our Platy? We started a 10 gallon tank (brackish) for our 2 Platys and our green spotted puffer Fish. Within the first 2 days our puffer ate the male Platy. Which was to be expected. And the female kept getting more and more swollen so we pretty much guaranteed she was pregnant. We took the female out so she could have the fry. She quit eating and so did our puffer. So we put a breeding box in our tank so she could still be by the puffer. Everything was fine but she was in there for about a week and still nothing. So we put them back together. And now about a month after we did that she is super swollen and now has something red protruding from her anal area. I have attached pictures so you can see what I am talking about. Does anybody know what this is? We thought maybe that it was that she hasnt felt safe enough to drop the fry but yet if we take her out of the tank she quits eating and so does our puffer and if shes in the breeding box she just doesnt do anything. Seems that her and the puffer have developed a relationship cuz he is always checking on her and making sure she is ok and we are afraid if we lose her then we will lose him also. So if anybody knows what this could be please let us know. Thank you! Pictures attached. |

| She could have dropsy, what are your tank levels like?? If it's dropsy there isn't any medicine for it. Maybe a more frequent water changes or a different diet would help??
The only other thing i can think of is constipation, and that's diet again, sometimes caused by over feeding.
There the only things i can think of other then pregnancy |

| Welcome to Fish Lore
I'm really sorry your platy isn't doing well.
If it were dropsy, the scale would be pineconed and from the pic, it doesn't look to be the case.
What are your readings for ammonia, nitrites and nitrates?
I hope other members with experience with platys will be able to help you.
Good luck |

| Although never experienced such infestations, from what I can gather so far is that it may be worm infestations, specifically nematode(round worm) Camallanus, which supposedly is common to livebearing tropicals.
This particular worm, unlike their relatives, can multiply w/o intermediate host in confined space, tank.
Treatment: If fish is still eating, try mixing 25mg of Piperazine citrate w/ 10 gram of food for 5- 10days.
If my memory serves me right, PIPZINE by AQUATRONICS is the one. I believe one teaspoon contains 250 mg, so proportion it out (1/10 of tea) and mix w/ food.
I hope this works for your fish. It is not easy to pinpoint the cause by the pics, but lot better than descriptions. Remember to leave the carbon in the filter in order to remove excess Med from the mixture.
You may want to do your own research on this round worm. Best luck and LMK if you find any new info. Last edited by cerianthus; December 9th, 2008 at 09:17 PM.

| That looks bad! I do not know if it is a disease. But I hope it is okay. That is cute the way the puffer goes and checks on her! |

There the only things i can think of other then pregnancy | As far as Dropsy (pinecone), can try Tetracyclin or its derivative such as OxyTC, ChlorTC or Chloramphenicol (maybe not available but heard from old timers, does wonders). No definite answers to wether virus or bacteria are primary pathogen on tropical fish. Last edited by cerianthus; December 9th, 2008 at 11:01 PM.

| We had a platy that looked JUST like that, but without the red anal potrusion. She had a very bloated and square look, and we thought she was prego, but we woke up one morning and she was dead. We still don't know what happened to her. I know not much help....I certainly hope she gets better soon! |

| If it was a mammal, I would say prolapsed uterus-I don't know if this could happen to a fish. I hope you find out and let us know-good luck |

| Hi, welcome to fishlore
GSPs are my favorite fish. I wonder if you know that they actually get 6" in length and need a minimum of 30 gallons? What SG is your tank at? I'm glad you're keeping him in brackish. If a puffer has stopped eating then there's definitely something wrong. Any additional info would be helpful |
