Phantom Tetra is sick!

My black phantom Tetra keeps opening and closing his mouth and not moving much. I read on the net that this can be the signs of some kind of disease or sickness so I moved him to my new QT. tank. I was just wondering if you guys know if he will get better, or if the disease is fatal. Please help me if you guys can. THanks

What are the water parameters?

Do you have any aeration?

Whenever you notice something different, run tests (pH, NH3, NO2) which will eliminate unnecessary guessing. It is hard enough to perform diagnosis on sick fish. Let's make sure it is not the wate condition.
Have you recently purchase the fish?
More info you give us about your tank and fish, better job our members will do in assisting.

Its too bad, he died. I had already tested the water and everything was looking good, but i still moved him to qt tank- where the poor guy got sucked into the filter and died. Thanks for your help anyway.

Now that you know your filter can be fatal have you thought about fish-proofing it? You may find that slipping the bottom part of panty hose over the filter intake will prevent little guys from being sucked up. Sometimes a piece of net from a retired fish net will do just as well. What kind of filter is it?

Sorry for the little guy....... I would do as emory suggested and fish-proof your filter intake. I would tie a sponge (with rubber-band, thread,or fishing line) around the filter inlet......something to keep not only the fish from being sucked up;but also provide a little distance from the inlet. The panty hose or netting can still cause the fish to be sucked to/not up the filter inlet, and that can be just as bad.
