Female sword tail is ill

Hi,

One of my female swordtails is lying upright (propped between filter and glass) in my tank. its hardly moved over the last two hours and its scales look slightly shiny green. Also the fish has a small chunk missing from its tail and when it does move about it drags its tail along the gravel. A few days ago I noticed that the fish was swimming very wobbly, waving its body about more than normally.

Just a few weeks ago (whilst I was away) my parents informed me that a balloon mollie was swimming oldly and it died a few days later. I have just conducted some water tests using an API liquid water test kit and the results are as follows:

pH - 7.2
nitrite - 0ppm
ammonia - 0-0.25ppm
Nitrite - 20-40ppm

Any help would be much appreciated

even the smallest amount of ammonia is dangerous to fish, you should do a water change to get rid of the excess ammonia. If the ammonia remains, then you can buy special chemicals to reduce the ammonia levels.

Good luck with your fish

Beware of buying chemicals to lower your ammonia...from the looks of things your tank is cycled, so if you remove your ammonia with chemicals that could completely crash your cycle by starving your bacteria and you'd possibly have to start from square one again with your cycle.

Sorry, I can't help you with your sick fish, but I just thought I'd warn you about that.

I agree, best to use Prime to detoxify the ammonia so it's still available to feed the bacteria.
