| Smoking and fishes Hello everyone!
I'm not sure if this is the right place in the forum to post this, but i'd like to know if anyone has had experiences having aquaria and smokers in the same house. How would this affect the aquaria? anyone knows?
Thxs!!! |

I sit in my patio next to the pond and have a good cigar with no ill effects. Always make sure my hands are clean too before servicing any aquarium |

| Nicotine builds up on the hands and could cause problems if you do not do as Hockeyref does (making sure hands are clean before servicing tanks.) The yellow stain that builds up, usually between the index and middle finger for most smokers, is a mix of nicotine and other components of cigarettes.
I would make sure that ashes, bits of tobacco, filters, etc do not make contact with the water, but otherwise it should be alright, other than the horrid smell.
(I am an ex-smoker, so I understand where you are coming from on that. ) |

Aquariums is also the plural of aquarium.
As far as smoking, yes, it can affect the tanks in the same way that smoke from cooking in the kitchen can affect aquaria.
Gas exchange will bring nearly anything from the air into the tank, though CWC's concerns (nicotine on the fingers, ash, etc...) are the biggest issues. If you have delicate inverts, like shrimp, the nicotine may be a bigger problem, as they have really delicate nervous systems. |

| I thought Aquaria was plural for Aquarium, sorry if that's not right.. ;-)
Well, my mom chainsmokes and I have like 5 or 6 cigs a day. I have two 10 gal aquariums (aquaria LOL) in my room, so I guess some of the smoke can get into the water. Everytime I'm gonna service my aquariums I do a really deep session of hand washing, so I guess that's not a problem. All the implements I use to service my fishes are in a close drawer and I'm used to smoke with doors and windows open. Would that be a problem?
Thanks to everyone here! |

| It sounds like you are taking enough precautions that it may not become as much of an issue as it may be for some people.
The idea of having the utensils in a closed drawer is a very good one. |

| Thanks chief! I always try to keep them away from my dog and my turtle, and in any case, I just wash them with mineral water before and after each use. |

As CWC said, with the precautions you take, your fish are likely not too horribly off due to your smoking. Though it can affect them, it likely won't be all that awful. This may be a case where carbon can be helpful, as well, if you change it out every few weeks. |

| I would do all that I could to keep the smoke from getting into the tank. If everyone smoked outside that would be a great first step. Does the lid have much in the way of holes? |
