Chytrid fungus

Anyone ever heard of this? My boyfriends little buddy Frogums died this morning and I was wondering if this was the cause. Three days ago I noticed that our African Dwarf Frog looked like he was shedding (which he does pretty regularly) but it wasnt coming off. I saw him several times trying to scrape at his head with his back feed as if he was trying to get it off. I didnt know about this disease and I just thought he was haveing trouble sheding so I didnt worry about it. I have had him for 9 months though so I dont think he had it when I bought him. Do you think that either nerites snails or live blood worm could have introduced this disease? Although he was housed with a betta which I know is not recommended he was able to get food (his stomach was not sunken in). He sunk to the bottom so I dont think it was any disease like bloat or intestinal blockage. I guess I shouldn't not get Evan (the boyfriend) another frog until I either treat the tank or wait 2 months... I feel bad...

Edit:
Everything is testing normal, I didnt have time to test the nitrates before left for work but the ammonia was 0 nitrite 0 pH 7.6 and temp 79... the Betta and snails seem fine and there are live plants in there java moss, walkeri crypt, and hornwort. Oh and he didnt get tangled in the plants and drown (I was worried about that with the java moss) he was upside down and stiff on the gravel this morning

Sorry, I was going to give you this link, but I am at work too and got interrupted. There is some discussion in this thread: fish compatible with african dwarf frogs? and there was another thread somewhere, too. It may be referenced in the thread that I linked...

I'm really sorry to hear about your frog.

Here's the other thread:

Chytrid Fungus in ADF's and ACF's

I haven't read anything about snails or live blood worm passing on this fungus.
Sometimes frogs will use their flippers to help shed their skin. The symptoms include hiding too much or staying at the top, trying to get out of the water, loss of appetite, and when they shed, it comes off in tatters.

It takes up to a month for the symptoms to appear. To me, it doesn't sound like that's what he died from especially since you had him for 9 months.

One more question. I was looking at the african dwarf frogs in our store and I am sure that my frog had some sort of infection. His eyes were cloudy and he his skin (the he usually sheded in large pieces) was all ripped up. What other fungal infections can affect frogs? Should I just treat the tank with something like maracyn or maroxy? I just dont want to throw a new frog in the aquarium and risk him dieing too. I also dont want to unnessacaraly stress out my little Master of the Bettas. Thank you for your help!

They're susceptible to bacterial infections, cloudy eyes is symptom of that. Redness of the skin can indicate a fungus.
Maracyn and Maracyn-Two can be used to treat them. (I don't know if these will hurt your snail)

If your betta isn't showing any symptoms of being sick, I wouldn't treat him unnecessarily.

As with any new inhabitant of a tank, you should quarantine a new frog.

I dont have a quarentine tank, I work at a fish store. Our fish are quarentine here before being put on sale. Any more quarentining=more being netted and moved=more stress. I dont find it nessacary. I was worried about the tank itself being a source of infection so I was wondering if I should treat the tank before I added another frog. But I've been thinking about it and I'm about to start grad school full time and still work full time and fish keeping is just stressful. I do everything I can and my fish die after several months. There's no reason or if there is it is so convoluded that I dont know what it is (dirty blood worms, bad water, low oxygen, starvation... who knows). Im not adding anymore fish... once they die they die... less work... less stress. Dont get me wrong Im gonna keep doing what I've been doing, water changes every week, testing every two weeks, cleaning filters ect. but if I wind up with one congo tetra swimming around in my 65 and and an empty 10 gallon, so be it. Thank you for your help, sorry to whine but Im jaded...

That's no problem Trio, I didn't think you were whining I know it can be frustrating.
I understand with work and school, there's very little time.

Good luck to you.
