Platy....is it sick?

Guys my platy is acting all weird...whenever you walk to the front of the tank it just skids up down right left stupidly and goes into hiding...doesnt come to the surface to eat till i move back...

im attaching a picture...is it sick?

Looks a little weirder...not the usual round belly..

Sounds like it is just being skittish. Have you had that particular fish very long? (Sometimes it takes a fish several months to grow accustom to seeing people. (We are, afterall, hundreds...if not thousands of times bigger than a platy.)

Are you slowly approaching the tank or quickly striding up to it? If you are approaching too quickly it may appear to the platy as though you are just 'appearing', which would scare it even more.

We've got a 55g with these fish that are distant cousins to an angelfish that were very skittish, until we started approaching the tank slowly and making sure they could see us coming. Now they almost eat out of my hand.

As far as I can tell from that picture he looks alright, but you are there to see him moving on a day to day basis, so your gut feeling of a weak appearance may be correct.

What are you feeding him and what is your feeding schedule?

The kids may have startled him. If they startled him it may just take time for him to be comfortable around people again. (Even a newborn human infant is so much larger than the fish that it could easily scare them. Kids are notoriously bad for loud noises, sudden movement, and being attracted to fish and other pets. )

I see what you mean about not having a round belly ...noidea why tho . Platies even the males are usually a little potbellied.

Ok I gotta disagree with CWC about the fish looking fine. The belly is too flat and the spine is too arched. In fact that fish looks just like the beginning stages of other platys I've had with fish tb. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I've had so many sick livebearers (in fact I've never been able to keep petstore livebearers alive ) I recognize one when I see one. Get her into quarintine & watch your other fish for sinking bellies. Also wear gloves if you put your hands into her tank. If you start treating her now with kanamycin, she might have a chance, though I've never been able to save a livebearer after they start wasting.

Of course it's not possible to give a definitive diagnosis without actually seeing the fish ...but I suspect it might be tb which seems to be common in livebearers. It could also be internal parasites...in that case the fish loses muscle mass due to nutrient deficiency, so it may look like the spine is protruding.
