Fish dying

In the last week I have lost 1 albino Cory and 2 Red Wag Platys. I have checked all of the bad toxins and all read zero. Nitrates are 5. Ph is 7.6. The temp is 74-78. I do a 50% water change once a week. I also have double filtration and aireation.I'm using an API test kit. I feed them 2 times a day with Omega One food and some Veggie rounds once in awhile for a treat.

I'm new enough to this so I'm not sure if it's some kind of fungus or what is going on. The Platy has white area under his belly the size of about half his body. The 2 cory's have a couple of shiny things on the middle section of their body's.

Any help would be great. This is getting depressing.

Hi dwil00, I'm sorry your fish are sick. I don't know much about fish disease, but someone should be along soon to help you.

What size and how old is your tank? Can you post a pic? These answers might help others help you.

Good luck.

The tank is a 29 gallon and it's about 6 months old.

to start i would slowly turn the temp up to around 82-83*. if ich is the cause then a temp above 82 for 2 weeks will eliminate it. warmer water also helps fish battle illness.

not sure about a diagnosis, but this should help in any case

hope somebody else will help you find a cure soon!

Do you live near enough to your LFS to ask someone there? If you have only had the fish a short period of time, the problem could have come in with the fish. Here are few questions that I have and maybe I can then answer your questions.
--how long have you had those fish
--did you get them all at the same time from the same store
--what other fish do you have in the tank, did you get them all at the same time
--do you have plants or snails in the tank
--is the white area under the Platy look smooth or fluffy
--did you know it is possible to have a tank too clean
--do you remember about what time frame the tank cycled

It might be ich, i have a ich problem right now and it is not great i have lost one black neon tetra because of it. like lilsoccakid said turn the temp up to speed up the process of the parasite. I am also using RID-ICH it is supposed to treat ich as well as many other parasites. But i would also go to the LFS and tell them the symptoms and get a final determination and go from there.

good luck

sorry your fishes are sick but id NEVER trust a LFS..they will sell you lots of things just by what you are telling them...and 90% of it u wont need....your best bet is to try to get a decent pic and see if someone here can help...as others said, if its ich, the 83 temps for 2 weeks will kill it..make sure you do extra water changes as warmer water has less oxygen..vaccuum the gravel as ich pores hide in there as well..goodluck and try to get a pic if you can

Could you describe their symptoms and behavior in more detail? It doesn't sound like ich...ich is a bunch of little white spots all over the fish, like grains of salt.

What are the other fish in the tank? Have they shown any symptoms of anything?

Also you said your temp is 74-78. That is quite a bit of fluctuation, and if it is changing quickly that could be a source of stress for the fish. What brand of heater are you using?

I would not raise your temp until we've diagnosed the disease for sure.

another question - can you tell if the "shiney" areas on the cory are raised?
