Questions on iridovirus....

My last baby gourami died out of the blue last night.

I was hoping that he didnt have the virus but... he did have it.

Now, as far as I have read, the virus is only on Dwarf gouramins but still, being a very caring fish mommy it worries me that the virus might spread to other fishes.

are there any cases of iridovirus infections on other species/Inverts?

I have in my 28 gallon:
2 Platies
4 guppies
2 mystery snails
2 ghost shrimp

any info will be of a great help

thanks,

Alessa

Iridovirus has been found in other fish species, particularly angels and rams, but it's not really known if the kind affecting dwarf gouramis is specific only to that species.

So it's impossible to answer your question.

I'm really interested in trying to find out more as well, since I have a DG in quarantine at the moment, and am wondering if it will ever be safe to add him to my community tank.

well, for what i have experienced... the disease just kicks in 48 hours before the fish dies, fish is fine for weeks or even months and then Boom! the fish gets sick 48 hours before and then dies....

so, the only way to know if your guy has iridovirus is... one or two days before it dies. poor gouramis, all thanks to those irresponsible breeders...

ya, my DG died when i got it almost right away. I brought it home and then a day later, it started to lay on the bottom and not eat at all. Then in about 2 days it died. Its really kind of sad to see this happening since they are such neat little fish. but luckily i had no other fish in the tank so i couldnt answer your questin, sorry.

Me again, I just found these two articles referring particularly to dwarf gouramis and this disease. The first article is somewhat technical, but the second is interesting as are the reader comments at the end of the article.

Hope this helps a bit. Now I worry about my survivors... Always something....

I lost 4 dwarf gouramis a couple of months ago. All four of them were fine then one by one they stopped eating ...bloated slightly...and died in a couple of days...over a period of a week or so I lost all of them. I have other fish in the tank and so far no one else is acting sick or looking bad. As a matter of fact the young albino cories in the tank were showing spawning behaviour yesterday. ( hoping for baby cories...lol)
