| | Fish Mentor | Sorry about your fish. Just for information what are the readings on ammonia, nitrite and nitrate.
I took a look at your profile, and it looks like your 190 lt tank (50 gallons) could be overstocked. How many of each do you have in there?
My suggestion is to do an immediate 25% water change, and remember those discus are sensetive to water conditions. After you post the readings we can maybe help to give more suggestions. Good Luck |

| | Moderator | Good morning Dee,
Im so sorry to hear about your Discus. Sometimes it just happens that way. I have had a healthy Discus one moment, then when they are sick they turn really dark almost black.. a sure way to know that something is wrong with them. Either just stress, and it goes away quickly or the dark color stays and then there is a problem with the fish.
Did you do a ammonia test on the water? Im curious to know if that may have something to do with the loss? Also, you really should be showing some nitrates and Im very surprised that your test showed zero. Can I ask what type of test kit you are using?
I hope your others are doing well now that you have done another water change. Sometimes something as simple as a water change can bring them around again.
Good luck with the lil guys! |

You really should be showing some nitrates. The API tester is tricky like that, you have to bang the heck out of that number 2 bottle or you will get incorrect readings. Do you shake the heck out of it for 30 seconds? Sometimes we have to slap the bottom of that bottle on a hard surface a few times or on the palm of our hands. After the water and solution are added, have to shake the heck out if for a total of 1 minute non stop.
Even with twice weekly water changes, you still should be showing nitrates. I change my water twice a week and most times even three times. (every 2-3 days). I still show nitrates on my tester. Have you tested the ammonia lately? You should have an ammonia test in that API kit. Unless you bought the tests separately? |

| | Fish Mentor | I agree with capekate, something is fishy! Your readings are off, AND you should take readings BEFORE your water changes. Do the change, then re-test 24 hours later. Then you will be able to judge how things are improving, or if you have to continue with the water changes.
When you have an overstocked tank, this is the ONLY way you can keep them healthy.
What is the reading for ammonia? |
