:( I'm losing one of my neons

Everyone was fine last night, when I turned the lights on this morning everyone colored up but 1 little guy.

He didn't come out to eat, is swimming nose down at times, seems to be breathing rapidly and is pretty weak.

I did a 50% water change, I got so worried I forgot to even check the levels before hand.
After a couple hours the levels were 0,0, and 10 nitrates.
So it's a good guess my nitrates were high.

I put him in a q tank, but after a few hours he was hiding and seemed worse. I thought maybe the stress of being moved and alone was getting to him, so I put him back in the tank.

I didn't feed them tonight and turned the lights out early.

I don't hold much hope for him, but wish him luck.

Any thoughts?

Is color loss spreading belt-like across the body? Or is it just not colored in some places? If you answered yes to either one of these questions, he must have neon tetra disease. THe symptoms you describe sound like the disease, and NTD is not curable as far as I know. I had one that did that, and it died. I checked stores for medication, but nothing was found. I even checked at other stores even after he died. I still cannot find any medicine for the cure of Neon Tetra Disease.

That' what I was thinking he had too, although it's his whole body that's pale.
You're right, there isn't a cure for it. I just don't know how he'd get it, I've had him 6 months and haven't added any new fish for months now.
I'm not holding much hope for him, unfortunately.

Well, as expected, the little guy didn't make it. I put him in the q tank last night, he was so weak and I didn't want him being picked on.

I don't know what's going on, a couple of serpae are chasing each other more than usual and one is hiding by the heater. One of my neons looks pretty fat. They will probably get peas today.

They weren't real anxious to eat this morning and were slow to wake up. One of my lights went out, so the tank is pretty dim so that could account for that.

Water levels are 0,0,10. Temp is 76. Off to do a water change. I don't know what else to do for them.

Sorry about your Neon Lucy I hope that your day gets better. I know how stressed and sad sick fishies can make us.

I'm sorry that you lost the little one.

For the other fish, if you have Stress Coat or Fish Protector, adding some to the water may help after a water change. Some Garlic Guard and/or Vita-Chem wouldn't hurt either. They can really be affected by lighting though, and that may be the only reason for any unusual behavior.

Thanks everyone, I replaced the light light bulb, raised the temp and added some extra stress coat and garlic with the water change.

Everyone looks pretty good tonight. Sometimes these little guys get sick and we never can figure out why.
