Dwarf Gouramis with Lymphocystis
As near as I can tell, what the growth is called is lymphocystis. At first it looked like perhaps a nip or injury, so I pulled him from the 55g. He is a beautiful neon blue dwarf, one of my original fish in the 55.
Within 24 hours the spot had grown to this raspberry like appearance. Other than being kinda unhappy from being alone, and in a smaller tank, he is eating and pooing and acting normal. However, the growth has increased in size.
This pic was taken on Friday. He is on his second course of Maracyn Plus, Vita Chem, Fish Protector. I cannot find any treatment ...
Has anyone else dealt with this. Apparently it is contagious - so far the rest of the 55g is good.
Thanks. Val

I've not dealt with that. But I found this:
The Lymphocystis virus causes small white swellings on fins and bodies of infected fish. There is no cure for this disease but most fish recover from the disease by themselves. This makes Lymphocystis one of the least serious diseases that your fish can be infected by. Your main concern if you discover Lymphocystis in your aquarium should be containment as there is no cure. Move all sick fish to recuperation/hospital tanks. Keep the fish there until they have recovered 100%. It is true that the disease usually isn't fatal and that the fish usually recover but this doesn't mean that you shouldn't try to contain the disease as the temporarily lowered health status of the infected fish can open the door for other more dangerous diseases.

I have treated this with garlic.
Flake or pellets soaked in garlic juice, feed every other day MAY help.

Yes this week I have posted about the open sore. It looked like a skin ulcer. I isolated my gourami and started myracin II thinking it was bacterial. He was handeling that fine. However, I read posts that it may be a parasite. I did a partial water change. Then I put in quick cure. He immediately went into shock. I don't think the open sore works well with parasite medication. So the only caution I have is be careful introducing
meds. I immediately changed the water out and he hung on for 2 days and died. I think he would have been fine if I left him alone. The antibiotics didn't seem to bother him though.
My second dwarf g. is still in the main tank. He is bloating up and turning blueish around the fat part and not eating. Garlic soaked peas did nothing. I researched and researched. The symptoms are not the same. The pet store advised a general cure for parasites and I am 50% through the treatment and he is not improving. Then after this is through I am to use erithomyocyn. So if he survives another 40 hours I will let you know if the erithomyocyn works.

Thanks Shawnie, for the moral support His colour doesn't show well in the pic, but he is a beauty for sure. I have a definite love affair with gouramis, so he will be well taken care of.

Thanks, Dave, Every bit of info help. Most of what I have read says as above, I have seen maybe 2 that say "kill the fish - it is a terrible thing and v. contagious"...Well, there is no way that will happen as long as he is my fish. He gets nice clean, warm water; a gentle cat to lay beside him and babysit; a "crazy mama" who talks to him and tells him how beautiful he is........and treatments as mentioned above. Keep your fingers crossed.

Thanks Dino, I have been using garlic soaked antibacterial pellets; daphnia; bloodworms, seaweed salad....( Not all together of course). I will keep you posted, and perhaps try exlusive pellets with garlic for the rest of the week!!

I have read your post on your sick gourami also. If I am correct and this is lymphocycstis, it is a virus and it is bacterial. Can't figure that out since his tank is all good, and the last fish introduced was Morley the pleco the first week in March. I do not believe it is a parasite...I will try to get a better pic and post it.
Good luck with your treatments.

thanks, Cindy. He is still swimming around, it may be wishful thinking, but I think the "thingee" looks a bit different today. Not as red, and perhaps a bit smaller.
He is eating garlic soaked medicated pellets, and pieces of garlic, as per Dino's suggestion.
I was away for all of Tues and got home later today, so happy to see him hanging in.
