Infected Tank, help starting over!

My friend with the goldfish found 2 of the 5 dead. They've had Ich and possibly fish fungus.

If you're not up to date on my other question, these were the (feeder) fish my friendly fish provider gave to this woman for free. It turned out that they were sick and I KNOW for a fact he'd NEVER have given them to her had he known they were sick.

He gave them to her to help her stablise her tank. Now with the Ich, and ehatever have you disease, she's decided she will take the goldfish back to the store.

Does anyone have really good recomendations on methods for how she might be able to totally clean her tank and start over?

The tank is a 5 gal and will be split for 2 bettas. She does not in any way shape or form want these fish to contract the diseases the goldfish have.

Any help is greatly appreciated

Id wash everything in hot water ...then refil with prime treated tap water...then follow this link http://www.fishlore.com/NitrogenCycle.htm

and id only get one betta for a 5 gallon...two would over crowd it leaving it prone to disease again, and the one betta would be so much happier in 5 gallons...goodluck!

might be a silly question, but what is the difference between Prime, and Bio Spira?

no questions are silly..bio-spira is a bacteria that cycles a tank within 24 hours..and prime treats tap water for chlorine and other minerals....

so is it ok to use both at once, or do they not work well together?

Shawnie has you covered....IF you do clean the tank, and filter, changing filter material and everything, you still have to use a conditioner on the new tank water to take out chlorine and so on, just don't use prime. Use what the bio-spira folks recommend, then add your fish and bio-spira at the same time, if that is how you are going to go. IF you don't use bio-spira, you should do a fishless cycle to prepare the tank for the betta.....that is explained up at the top of this page under 'Articles', then go to freshwater beginners, then the link to the nitrogen cycle....it tells all about it.....Good Luck
