HITH disease

I just lost one of my dwarf Gouramis to HITH disease. My other one just started showing the same signs. I have a 20 gal tank with perfect water according to my test readings. Water is changed at 25% weekly. What should I do? Most remedies require medications and I'm not sure if I should treat the tank or isolate the sick in a hospital tank. Thanks.

Hi aquarium rookie, Welcome to Fish Lore.

I'm sorry about the loss of your fish and that your other fish is ill.

I can't help you, but hang in there, someone should be along shortly who can.

This is actually posted in the wrong section it should be under Freshwater Fish Disease to get the attention it deserves, but don't worry, one of the mods will probably move it for you.

Good luck to you and your fish.

HI, WELCOME TO FISHLORE!

HITH is thought to be a dietary problem. Specifically a lack of vitiman C. To combat it you need to feed really high quality food, a variety of frozen and flake, and use vita-chem every other day.

Also if the fish have ulcers you will want to treat with maracyn-two, or maracyn plus.....

Food as described above alone, and good water may help, but if the fish have open sores, they will need treatment with medications.

I have heard that using carbon in filters on a regular basis also contributes to this because it pulls too much of the minerals out of the water....

I never run carbon in my filters unless I'm removing medications. Then after 24 hours I remove the carbon and go back to the bio-filtration of floss, sponges and bio-balls....
