Melafix, Pimafix etc

I have a tank with honey gouramis, guppys and corydoras. I just bought one albino corydora and unforunately, it was only when I got home that I noticed that a couple of the fins were worn away. I wasn't sure whether it had been attacked in the fish shop, or has fin rot, so I have added some Melafix.

The label on the Melafix also recommends Pimafix, so I'm thinking of getting that too. I noticed on a couple of my other corydoras that they were looking slightly red on the base of their pelvic fins.

Should I also be using any general treatments on a regular basis after I finish the course of Melafix and Pimafix? I've just bought a small bottle of 'general fish tonic' from Pets at Home which says to use once a month as a preventative measure, though haven't tried this yet.

Hi fionah,
I've read here on the board that Melafix should not be used Labyrinth fish.
Here is the thread:

Good luck, I hope your fish are ok.

You'll want to put some carbon in your filter for a few hours and do a 50% water change today & tomorrow at least to clear out the melafix since it could kill your gourami.

Rather than melafix and pimafix, what I'd recommend for the tank is Garlic Guard (1 drop per gallon daily) to help guard against infection, Fish Protector (2 drops per gallon daily) to help boost the immune system and encourage faster regrowth and Vita-Chem (1 drop per gallon daily) to encourage faster regrowth. www.thatfishplace.com is a good place to get them all online if you can't find them locally. None of them are harsh and they are all safe for all fish.

I'd also recommend Prime for treating all of your water, if you're not already using it.
Also 25% water changes daily after clearing the melafix out.

I will add the carbon filter tonight (I had taken it out yesterday to add the Melafix).

Thanks for the website but I live in the UK. I'll do some research to see if I can get those products here.

I still don't understand why Melafix doesn't have a huge warning that says "Don't use with labyrinth fish such as bettas, guorami, etc..."

I think it's because there isn't a law forcing them to do so.
