Welcome to Fishlore!

Red gills can be a sign of ammonia poisoning. What are the ammonia/nitrite/nitrate levels in your tank? If you don't have a test kit, you should get one. The one most of the folks around here use is the API Master Test Kit. It seems more expensive than the little strips, but the cost per test is less than that of the strips.

Welcome to Fishlore.

I think that high ammonia is a most-likely cause of the reddish gills. Daily water changes of 25-40% will help and if you can find a water conditioner called "Prime", that would be great. If not, look for a water conditioner like Amquel+ that helps bind ammonia.

Ammonia poisoning

hi this certainly does sound like ammonia poisoning, i recommend a third to half tank water change as i had this problem once, fish discrete ammonia which in turn turns to nitrite in which turns to nitrate (harmless to fish providing your ph levels are under 7.0ph the ammonia then gets filtered, the filtration needs to build up good bacteria this can take several months you can buy bacteria building solution to hurry the process, never clean bacteria filter and only rinse in aquarium water you take out of the tank when you do water changes, it is recommended you get full test kit they should be ok in a few days or more.

goodluck

Matt, if you check out the dates of the posts, it has been over three months. Either the fish have recovered from the ammonia poisoning, or they didn't make it.

It's okay to post in older threads that regard more general information, or are debates (after six months of inactivity, they lock, though), but please don't necro threads that needed simple, timely advice.
