Sulfa ok?

Howdy,
I have a rainbow shark that is showing early signs of fungus around his mouth. I have had good success using this medicine in the past. I wanted to check and see if this medication would be safe for my other inhabitants.

Hi! Welcome to FishLore!
I'd rather not medicate the entire tank, I would use a quarantine tank for this purpose..

I don't have a hospital tank. Hence the question regarding the other fish. I have had very good results with sulfa in the past with another setup a while back, but if my other species would not tolerate sulfa I would switch to a more suitable treatment.

If I'm not mistaken Sulfa messes with your beneficial Bacteria and can cause you to have to cycle your tank again. Do you have a 5g bucket or tub you could use to medicate your fish in?

In your aquarium profile you posted that you didn't know about the nitrogen cycle. If you will read the article at this link, you will understand the problem Butterfly is refering to about it causing problems with your cycle.

Good Luck.

ok, I know you are right. So I went out and bought a second aquarium. My current one is ten gallons, my new one is 20 gals. It was time to get a bigger one anyway. Now I can keep my fish as they were outgrowing the 10 and I was soon to return them to the store. I used to have a 90 but I went the other way, smaller, back to my roots, hea.

Onto the sulfa... I went to two stores and neither had any. The only fungus treatment available was Jungle brand Fungus Clear. (nitrofurazone, furazolidone, potassium dichromate). My rainbow shark has white on and around his two little whiskers, and some patches that may or may not be fungus on the sides of his body. I noticed this three days ago.

I keep the tank pretty clean, every 10 days a partial water change and I vacuum the substrate. I feed them; crab and lobster bites for the loach, sinking carnivore pellets for the shark, the pictus, and pleco, algai wafers for the placo, and fresh romaine lettuce always available and eaten by both the shark and the pleco, while perched upon by the loach.

On the new tank I am using an under gravel filter with two powerheads as well as a Whisper 20 hang. (the 10 gal has no undergravel filter, just gets vacuumed and has two hangs.)

What is your opinion on undergravel filters? Pro or con?

I am new here. I was a casual member of AquaLink many years ago. Nice to meet you folks and thanks for your help.

Duh, ok, I'm dumb. Yes, I am familiar with cycling a new tank. I just don't remember it being called a nitrogen cycle. Probably because I'm getting old hea hea. I think i will go the route of the Biospira. I used a similar product on my ponds a couple years back and it worked great.

I need to get the new tank up and running fast so I can move my other fish into it, and then treat the rainbow shark in the 10 gallon.

Welcome to Fishlore. ::th

For your rainbow shark, I would use an herbal med called "Rid Fungus" daily and keep the water extra clean with more frequent water changes. Triple Sulfa wouldn't really be the med for a fungal issue.

I'm not a fan of the UGFs and prefer HOBs, for water chemistry issues as well as the dangers to fry and other bottom-dwellers or bottom-swimmers.
