popeye

Just added 4 new african cichlids to my 75 gallon this weekend and have noticed that one has 'popeye'. I assume he/she had this at the store and I didn't notice or it just appeared. None of my other fish (the newbies or those already in the tank) are showing any symptoms. Other than daily water changes, which I am not sure are necessary since I really don't think it was my water that initiated the problem, what should I do? Contagious? Reading various internet sites keep giving me completely different answers. Help!!!!!!!!!

First of all did you cycle the tank, and what are the ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate readings? Did you quarintine the new fish before putting them in the tank? If you have a q tank you should isolate the sick fish immediately. If not it would be a very good idea to set up a 5 or 10 gal q tank...doesn't need much, just a heater & cheap sponge or hob filter and a cave or flowerpot or couple plants. Once the fish is isolated, I believe Maracyn 2 is a good med for popeye.
