Torn Fin Please Help!

Hi

One of my red eye tetras has a tear little bit out of her anal fin. Apart from this seems healthy. I have 5 others and their fins are fine. I got them on Saturday and store is very good fish very healthy brilliant guys work there so dont think its from a disease from there.

She is one of the bigger of the school of 6

Trying to post a video but have to figure out how to connect to computer. I put some stress coat in tank.

It was fully cycled before i put fish in and amonia, nitrites are zero and nitrates very low too.

Any ideas what may have happened and what to do, do fins grow back?what should i watch out for. I am in Ireland so we probably have same products but different brands.

I will go to store to ask advice too but just wanted to ask advice here too.

Poor little tetra

Extra waterchanges to keep the water in pristine condition should see the fin heal back quickly. ( doubled waterchanges for a couple of weeks)

It was probably torn by one of the others of the school, they are fin-nippers. Having 6 is a good thing, that spreads out the nipping so none of them should suffer too greatly.

Good luck.

Thanks

What percent should i change at a time and should I do it twice a week for next few weeks

Is it a good idea to let water sit for couple days in a never used bucket before adding to tank, should i put anything in it

Even though I am not new to fish there has been a huge increase in knowledge and better systems. We used to just change quarter of water every month or 2 thats what was advised 10years ago!Havent had aquarium fir several years so relearning best ways to do stuff

thanks for help

I would normally do 50% waterchanges weekly as a normal thing. Some people spaz when ya mention more than 30% and will advise ya do 50% in 2 different changes per week... really either is fine.

I would do 100% worth of waterchanges per week when there are torn fins or something of that nature, but NEVER a 100% change at one time... either (2) 50% changes or (4) 25% changes or whatever, per week.

Yeah, that 25% per month or two is very outdated info...

If you are on a well for your water you wouldn't have chlorine and would not have to add anything to it, but if you are on a city (municipal) water supply you will need to add dechlorinator to the water. Either way, the water that goes back in the tank needs to be within 2-3 degrees farenheit of the tank water already in the tank to avoid putting your fish in shock.

I hope that helps.

I think just doing the water changes like CWC posted and using stress coat will have the fin damage healed up soon enough. Liquid vitamins are a help, but you would have to see what the local shops carried.

CWC, I thought I was the only one that does this!!

You are right on, it cuts down the algae, and keeps the tanks happy.....I'm lucky though because I AM on a well, and no treating the water...

Good to hear. Protein will also help in regenerating ripped fins. Bloodworms are an excellent source of protein.
