Yes it can happen, I got Fish-TB years ago, but a trip to the doctor sorted me out in no time. And yes it is rare; especially if your are careful and use a little common sense - not something I did or had when I got the fish-TB but I was a lot younger then.

Thanks for asking this question. I wasn't sure if this happened or not but I've taught my kids that no matter how much or how little, even just feeding the fish, we must wash our hands with hot soapy soapy water when were done. Also I make sure that my fish supplies (like thier pail, thier nets, thier gravel vaccum) never come in contact with any people stuff. Its not that I don't love my fish, its just that well to quote forrest gump "you never know what your gonna get".

It is rare, but like janoue posted clean up good afterwards and our fish stuff is seperate, we got cups, turkey basters, wooden spoons and big containers that are only used for the fish. You can get fish keepers gloves and plenty of cleaning tools to minimize the time you have to put your hands or arms into the tanks. And don't go in with open cuts. All of this helps you and the fish, even though it is pretty rare to catch something from a sick fish.

Dino and I have only heard of 3 documented cases of fish Tuberculosis transfering to humans in our time in the hobby (dino has spent 26 years or more in the hobby.)

Fish TB is not as common as people try to get others to think. People get sick in the winter, they call it the flu. A large % of them are influenza, but not every one of them. People see a wasting away of the fish and a lot of people automatically assume it to be Fish TB.

Unless you are drinking your fishwater in large amounts or getting it in open wounds you should be safe. (If you put open wounds in the fishtank and expose the fish to whatever bacteria may have gotten into your wound you deserve what you get back from them.)
