Sick cory cat?
I just got this cory from the fish store yesterday... Well I got 5 and he is the only one that doesn't look so good... He's not active at all, other then to swim away when my swords try to take a bite at him. He's very pale, but as far as I can tell he has no disease? My water parameters are all good... Does anyone have any idea what might be wrong with this guy? Can I help him out at all? I'm pretty sure he is going to die... But I just can't understand why? Should I take him back to my fish store? I feel so bad, but maybe he will pull through? Any suggestions how to make life a little less stressful for him? I do have another ten gallon set up, It's just got a single swordtail fry in there... Nothing to bother him. But I think moving him might just be more stressful. Suggestions? Please? Thanks!

Some corys seem to not handle stress as well as others. Make sure he has a good place to hide, and see how he is in a couple of days.

Sometimes, turning the light off is a good idea. Just to give him time to adjust without so much stress. Also don't feed the first 12 hours. The introduction of any fish should be slow.
If you have any way to seperate the other fish in the tank, without actually tanking the corys out, it would be a good idea. The swords should definately not be able to pick on him, but he SHOULD be able to socialize with the other corys. If the tank settles down some in the next couple of days he might just pull out of it. Best of Luck

Thank you for your replys. He wasn't socializing with the other corys. But I went out last night and came home and he was in a bowl on the counter. My mom says she found his dead sometime last night and removed him from the tank. I'm not concerned that we has actually sick so thats good. I bought ten fish and I only lost one Not bad I guess. I'll return him and get a new cory. Hopefully this one does better. Thanks again!

Sorry to hear the little guy didn't make it. Sometimes they're not healthy at the LFS, or the stress of getting netted is just too much for them.

Thanks Yeah... I've seen the guys netting fish at my lfs. I feel so bad for the fish. The guys there are so rough with them. I just got my new cory. This guys seems much better. I floated the bag for 15 minutes and dropped him in. On his way down he saw the other corys and instantly swam over and joined them. Lol it was a beautiful thing.

Yea, corys joining an existing shoal is great to watch. I started a thread about a similiar thing with my panda corys over in the corydoras subforum, called 'My Peeps!'.

Hey, now that I got your msg today about 5 cories.. welcome from youtube!
It's true, they make you want to bag the fish yourself with how bad they often do. Cories are such great little fish and I'm glad the new guy joined right in with the crew.
They are a bit sensitive to water conditions and I think conditions at the store were too much for the one you lost. You did your best to save him, but it sounds like he was on his way out when you got him.

Lol hey there!! You found me Blah... This Cory is not good news. Well I can't be sure but I think it is the new guy. They were all fine last night and I woke up this morning and he was face down beside a rock I'm pretty sure he is going to die... Jeez I hate when fish die under my care I feel like I killed him... But I don't think I did. I can still return this guy but my god. I feel like after replacing him once it shouldn't happen again. I just hope my lfs doesn't give me a hard time. When I replaced the cory the first time he was asking how big my tank was n whatever. But it's not like I'm over stocked and it's dying from bad water conditions. So I suppose they can't say no. I have a 4 and 2 day guarantee on them.. Lol four on the new guy and two on the others. So I'll just bring in both of my paper when I go in I guess. Thanks for your replies guys

i'm sorry to hear about the new guy. Unfortunately corys can be like that.. a lot of fish can with the way they run their tanks & all. It's not your fault, we all have these.

Oh. So sorry about that. I've lost corys 'spontaneously' too. Try not to kick yourself for it, hey. It happens.

Thanks guys I replaced the second cory that died. And now they are all swimming around happy as can be! (two days later) I think all is going well... Now I just have to figure out why my swords tails look a little beat up... I'm thinking its the serpae tetras? Their fins have been beat up since I got them... And I often see them beating on eachother... I just hope it's not something more then that...

5 serpaes (I think they like more?) and 4 swords. I would add more serpaes but I added like ten fish to a fairly young tank. So I'm realizing now I probably should have only added 5 but my water conditions are all good. No problems. I'm just looking out for anything that might have come in with the new fish before I add more.

How big is the tank? Depending on the type of swordtails that you have, they get up to 5" - so 4 would need 20g. The Serpaes only get to 1.5" so 5 of them would be 7.5g. They do better with 6 or more. Cories get to about 2.5" each, so 5 of them would need 12.5g. That's a total of 40g needed for the bioload of those fish.

Ugh :S It's like a 28 gallon? I talked to some people before I stocked the tank and they said it would be cool And even that I could get a pair of blue rams. Darn... Oh well... Um I have a ten gallon. I could always just have the tetras in there. Once my swordtail baby grows up a bit. It probably doesn't help to much. But I'm running two filters on the tank. It's like 300gph. And all the fish I have are really tiny(for now). So I'm sure they will be fine in that tank until I can figure out what fish is going in the ten.
