I recently had a problem with ammonia but that is fine now. Now all of a sudden my male guppy is always staying at the top and portions of his tail seem to be missing. His appetite still is good though. I was wondering if this is a disease or if it is from fin nipping. He is in a 20 gallon tank with a female guppy, 4 zebra danios, and a rainbowfish.
do you have a pic? it sounds like fin nipping and the danios are the nippers.. they tend to be nippish in schools under 6.. and that male guppy tail is a colorful target.
I'm definately NOT an expert, but I have a similar problem with my guppy. his tail looks nipped but his tank mate died last night & his tail is getting worse. I read on this site under freshwater fish disease that my fish could be suffering from nitrite/nitrate poisoning
Quote:
Nitrite/Nitrate Poisoning Tropical fish are lethargic or resting just below the water surface and you are getting high readings on your nitrite and nitrate test kits. Nitrite / Nitrate poisoning is not a disease but will kill your tropical fish if not remedied. It results from having a large bio-load on the filtration system or from not performing enough water changes. Perform a partial water change immediately and monitor the nitrite and nitrate levels closely until the situation is resolved. You may have too many fish in the tank and will need to perform more frequent water changes. Nitrite readings on your aquarium water test kit would indicate that your tank is still in the aquarium nitrogen cycle nitrite phase, or it is undergoing a mini-cycle if you've recently added more fish to the tank.
I'm doing 50% water changes daily and am using melafix for his fin
My guppies tail is looking worse and worse everyday. I think I might lose him. It looks as if a shark got to his tail, not just the danios. From what I have observed the danios have been very peaceful and I have not seen any evidence of fin nipping. I'll try to get a pic up if I can find my camera.
do you have a seperate tank that you can treat him in? it sounds like he may have a secondary infection from the wound and i think a treatment of trisulfa would be warranted to try and clear up that guppy's health.
You could treat him with triple sulfa, which is a strong med that works well on fin rot or you could try rid-fungus by kordon. it's an organic liquid that treats fungus conditions like fin rot. it's not as harsh and safe for the other fish.
Unfortunately my poor guppy's tail and top fin have almost fallen off and he doesnt seem to have much time left. I was wondering if fin rot was a contagious disease or not and should I be concerned that any of my other fish could come down with it?

it is considered contagious to a point although it isn't always.. it's possible and if you're worried about it, i'd treat the tank with the rid-fungus: http://www.drsfostersmith.com/Produc...&N=2004+113021 as a precaution now or at the 1st sign of others having fin rot. personally i'd hold off until i saw reason to use it.
does your little guy still eat ok? do you have a small hospital tank to put him in now?
Unfortunately I don't have a hospital tank right now, but yes, he is still eating ok. I looked online and their are flake products that claim to cure fin rot. You think it would be ok to momentarily put him in a bucket during feeding time and feed him these flakes?

I actually found a nice quarantine tank for him and have been treating him with medicated fish food and triple sulfa. His tail still looks terrible but his behavior has been normal and he is eating ok. I was just wondering how long you think I should keep him in quarantine?

I'd leave him in for a little bit, at least a couple days after finishing the trisulfa course. once the meds are done, give him a good 25-50% water change daily and test the water chemistry daily. Ideally, i'd like to see the start of regrowth before putting him back in the main tank, but if he seems alright after a couple days past the trisulfa then he should be fine to go back in the main tank.
