u.v. sterlizer's will help keep it disease free to an extent. It wiill not 100% gurantee no disease but you will probably not get much disease.

Also would a uv sterilizer really be worth my money? and would it remove helpful bacteria too?

Re: Would a U.V. sterilizer get rid of diseases?

I would say no it's not necessary but if you have a little extra money your tank would benefit from it.

bottom line NOT necessary but definately helpful. I plan on buying one in a little bit as yes it keeps most diseases at bay. Do your research on them and buy a good one. There are generally two types, one that doesn't last as long and one that does. Water passes through it and the free floating particles are killed by the UV light, but don't look at it.

I was told UV don't kill, it sterilizes so bacteria can't multiple.

There is no need for it to actually "kill" the bacteria if it makes it unable to multiply =) If a thing can't multiply, it eventually happens that it doesn't continue

Re: Would a U.V. sterilizer get rid of diseases?

A tip, on ebay search for Jebo UV and you can usually get a 9 watt model for around $30. 9 watts means you'll never have green water (I know from experience, it clears it up inside a week and prevents it from ever coming back) and does a good job on single cell nasties. For parasites and other stuff you can see with the naked eye, you need at least 30 watts I believe to penetrate & kill.
