Help! I got up this morning and just fed my fish quickly before going to school for an exam. Just got back and took a look at my fish to check they were ok and 2 of my danios look ill. They arent swimming much just hovering at the surface and their scales look as if they are sticking up!

I don't know what to do! What is this? The only thing i have is Melafix, could i treat them with this? Should i treat the whole tank incase the others have caught it?

Gwenz, it sounds like they're pineconing. I'd start with a water change.

you might also want to test your water to see what's going on. i don't think melafix will hurt.

sounds like dropsy to me. check the disease post isabella has at the top of the board. i am a fan of melafix when fish are ill. i dont think it can do any harm and when they're very ill, anything is worth a try in my opinion! keep us updated. tan

Hey Gwen,
Sorry to hear about your Danios - you might want to see if you can find Maracyn-Two or an antibiotic product with Minocycline as the active ingredient if your fish shop doesn't have the maracyn-two.

From what I understand of it, Dropsy isn't really contagious, but it's a sign of an internal infection caused by bacteria in the water, so if the other fish don't have symptoms, they may be able to go to a seperate tank while treating the tank those 2 danios are in.
