as you may have read in the Betta section, my new birthday present Betta came down with what I assume to be fin rot on his 3rd day home, and then died sometime early this morning, on his 4th day here. I don't think there is a problem with the water. plantlife is thriving, and so is the little otto who has been in there for at least 3 weeks. i had to remove 1 plant because it started to die right after i put it in there, but i think it's because it was non-aquatic. there are 6 other plants growing fine.
as for my poor and newly deceased Betta, he was very happy in his new 10 gallon home, swimming around and eating fine for 2 days. (not overeating, i was careful!) then yesterday it seemed that most of his long tail (veiltail) was missing, and he was listless and sitting at the bottom a lot. then i found him floating behind the filter. thinking he was dead, i moved the filter, but he swam away. wouldn't eat though.
can anyone diagnose this problem? do you think he was just sick when we bought him? I want to get another, but i don't want the same thing to happen to him. I tested to water with the only test I have, which is for nitrites. they were at 0. my Ph levels are usually around 7 whenever i take water samples to the petstore to be tested.
and another question: is fin rot inevitable for Bettas? it seems that a lot of Betta owners are constantly treating this disease with their Bettas. what causes it? can it be prevented?
thanks for taking the time to answer all these questions. I really just wanted to rescue a Betta from a little cup - not so he can die in a couple of days.
