Discoloration

My danios are getting slightly discolored. I've noticed that they seem to have darker areas on their backs and am wondering what it could be?
Is it just stress? Or could it be some sort of disease?

My tank is still cycling and the ammonia readings have been at a steady 2.0 for about 2 weeks. I've also been doing water changes to help keep the ammonia down as well. We still don't have a liquid nitrite/nitrate test kit... We only have the cruddy strips right now.. so I'm not sure if there are any signs of those... I'll test with them tomorrow, but well... it's the strips :P

So yeah.... any help would be appreciated. I'll try to get pictures of them tomorrow to show the discoloration.

Re: Discoloration

Hi there!

It's hard to say what is wrong with them, but one thing is for sure...when ANY ammonia is present, fish are STRESSED, which often causes discoloration.* Also it will affect how well they fight diseases. How often are you doing water changes? And how much are you changing? How big is your tank? Increasing water changes may help them at least be more comfortable, if nothing else.* Just don't vacume the gravel. What are your nitrites and nitrates (even with the strips you might get some sort of idea what point of cycling you're in).* Good luck and keep us posted.
