Finrot

My betta had a nasty case of finrot over a month ago and was slowly recovering when it started up again. I've been told melafix is bad for him by rose, who should know, so I'm really not sure what to do. I just did a good water change, the water is clean but I've noticed him sometimes getting stuck on a plant that I put in for the tetras to hide in. Is it possible that he got injured and got an infection in his lower fin? If so what can I do other than keep the temperature high and watch the water?

Re: Finrot

If a fish has a cut on its skin, the cut certainly can lead to an infection, especially if the water is not clean (i.e. it has high nitrate, and/or any ammonia and nitrite). Now, I do not know much about how to treat Bettas, but if Melafix is not safe, maybe something by Mardel Labs will be. This company has a lot of fish medications for a lot of diseases. However, before you buy something by Mardel Labs, check with Rose to make sure it's safe for your Betta.

Re: Finrot

Just for future reference, the recommended medication for Fin rot for Bettas now is Furan-2 or Maracyn2. Neither of these products will hurt the bettas or the biological filtration of the tank. Betta finrot just does not respond to the strict water change and clean tank method that works so well with other smaller finned fishes.

Melafix AND Pimafix are just not going to be recommended for any betta or other fish by me. I am still struggling with the aftereffects of the treatment that Marty received. I believe that he is not going to make it, and it is all so unnecessary because the medication that was supposed to be helping him backfired badly.
