Medication question

I recently moved my betta Mr. Red into a 5 gallon tank. He was doing really well for awhile. I've been putting melafix in the tank because I'm trying to heal his tail that he nipped pretty badly while in his 1 gallon tank. Of course I had to take the carbon filter out, but I never replaced with a non-carbon filter which I'm starting to realize that I probably should have. Since yesterday I have put a different filter in place of the carbon filter so the water wouldn't get so cloudy. I think I did it too late, because now Mr. Red has cloud eye which I know the melafix will heal, but now I think he also has an exterior fungus on his face. I'm pretty sure it was caused by the fact that I didn't have a replacement filter to take place of the carbon filter. I did a complete water change this morning. So, now everything is clean and all of the chemical levels are back to normal. My question is since he now has the fungal disease along with cloud eye and his tail problem I have to use pimafix too. So, is it OK to put both melafix and pimafix in the tank at the same time? Natalie

Re: Medication question

Carbon is not necessary to run a tank. The only time I ever use it is to remove meds from the tank. Yes you can use melafix and pimafix together. In fact, a trusted friend of mine who breeds angels and african cichlids recommends that you use both together when an illness calls for using either medication. Hope you fishie gets better soon!
